this is the back ground I have if it helps I don't have his D.O.B or if they married or his D.O.D as my nan married an Andrew sharkey in 1938 saying she was a spinster and that was in RICHMOND Surrey England
any help I would be very grateful

Military records after 1922 are still with the MOD. They have to be ordered at a cost of £30.

Mind you, with such a common name & no dob, it'll be difficult job identifying them.

Does their MC give his father's name? It might be possible to find him on the 1901 Scottish census (transcriptions on various sites) or 1911 on Scotlandspeople which is pay to view. That would also hold his birth reg.

David Report 8 Jun 2018 22:52

thank you for the info

ArgyllGran Report 9 Jun 2018 12:05

There must be a gap in the Dundee birth records on Scotlands People.

There is no record of any Campbell being born in Dundee between 1867 and 1943.

Trying a few other common surnames at random -
no Smiths between 1867 and 1922.
No MacDonalds between 1867 and 1952.

However, there are these two. Lochee was a town which gradually became engulfed by Dundee.

282/5 244

282/5 21

If you register with Scotlands People, and buy the minimum of 30 credits for £7.50, you can view the images of the original documents - 6 credits each.

The cert will give you their parent's names, and the place and date of parents' marriages.

Of course, without more to go on, you still wouldn't know if either of them was your James or not.

ArgyllGran Report 9 Jun 2018 12:09

Probably one of them - in fact the only possibility showing in 1901 census:

James Campbell
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: James Campbell
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896
Relationship: Son
Mother's name: Elizabeth Campbell
Gender: Male
Where born: lochee, Forfarshire
Registration Number: 282/5
Registration district: Lochee
Civil Parish: Liff, Benvie and lnvergowrie
County: Angus
Address: 33 Mid St
ED: 2
Household schedule number: 148
LINE: 17
Roll: CSSCT1901_104
Household Members:
Name Age
Elizabeth Campbell 40
William Campbell 15
James Campbell 5

But you're not sure if he was born in Dundee or not, David?

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 9 Jun 2018 12:40

Have you looked for a marriage in both Ireland & England/Wales?

Kay???? Report 9 Jun 2018 12:45

David Report 10 Jun 2018 02:55

hi to all a big thanks for your time and help with the information its hard to know were to look and being the other side of the world I cant go to any of the shows to get advice

Kay???? Report 10 Jun 2018 10:46

Was there any children born between Elizabeth and James Campbell,if so where and any names, dates would help.

Where/when did Elizabeth Sharkey die.?

ArgyllGran Report 10 Jun 2018 11:50

And do you know her exact date of birth? That might help us to pick out her death from several for women of that name, born c1903.

ArgyllGran Report 10 Jun 2018 11:55

As she married in Surrey, these might be possible births of Sharkey children, all born in Surrey :

Bridget M, 1938
Robert P, 1939
Shirley, 1940 3rd qr
Kathleen E, 1940 4th qr
John F, 1947
Dorothy A V, 1950

Of course, the two 1940 births can't both be children of the same parents.

David Report 11 Jun 2018 20:17

Bessie Roberts born 14/04/1903 died 02/02/1976
patsy died 1924
daisy born 1926
john born 1930
james born 1931
Shirley sharkey born 1940

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jun 2018 21:05

"patsy died 1924"

I think you mean Pansy, born 1924 in Wellingborough?

For our reference -

Daisy, John and James were all born in Bristol.

Shirley born in Surrey.

Birth Place: Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland

A different man ??

James Campbell
in the British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920
Name: James Campbell
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1885
Birth Place: Dundee, Forfar
Age: 19
Document Year: 1904
Regimental Number: 8194
Regiment Name: Connaught Rangers
Form Title: Short Service Attestation
Number of Images: 23

Was already in 3rd Royal Highlanders in 1904.
Labourer, mill worker.
5ft 3.5ins, fresh complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair.

I think it says he was in the Connaught Rangers in Galway, and then in Mullingar.
Then served in Poona, India.

Intended place of residence (on discharge in 1907 ?? ) 7 Mary Street, Dundee.

Then there's a bit about discharge in 1914:
on medical grounds - tuberculosis which had originated in Lochee, Dundee, while on reserve.
Address in 1914: 29 Lorne (or maybe Lorna) Street, Lochee, Dundee.

NOK: sister, Catherine Campbell, 22 Mid Street, Lochee.

Maybe not the right James Campbell.
There's a small note at the bottom of one page which says either "Man died" or "Mum died. More likely "man died" 30/08/1917.

Pansy Campbell, who was born 1924 in Wellingborough, died 1925:

Deaths Mar 1925 (>99%)
Campbell Pansy 0 Bristol 6a 17

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jun 2018 22:04

Unfortunately James's DOB doesn't help with finding his death.

All the deaths of 1885 James Campbells in England/Wales are just for men born c1885 - no actual date given.
None of them are in Bristol.

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jun 2018 22:10

If, perhaps, he went back to Dundee later in life, there's this possible death:

282/3 773
St Andrew (Dundee)

But James Campbell is a very common name.
