ArgyllGran Report 30 Nov 2018 12:26

I'm not sure Bertha was ever actually married to George Leslie - maybe for religious reasons? She was RC, he was C of E.

I don't see a marriage record, anyway.

1901 census -
Bertha's birthplace is given as America - and also her son Harry is said to be born in America.

Son Harry is with his father Henry G in 1891 - but no sign of Gustavus:

Harry Coyne
in the 1891 England Census
Name: Harry Coyne
Gender: Male
Age: 4
Relationship: Lodger
Birth Year: 1887
Birth Place: USA
Civil Parish: Whitehaven
Residence Place: Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
Sub registration district: Whitehaven

Henry G Coyne 47 - Artist (Sculp [tor?] ), Ireland, married
Harry Coyne 4

I see now that RG has already posted travel and marriage records for Harry.

Kucinta Report 30 Nov 2018 18:34

Apologies if the 1939 register for widow Ella and son has already been posted. Note the address, 9 Springfield Place, was bertha's address on the probate record Argyllgran posted:

9 Springfield Place , Scarborough M.B., Yorkshire (North Riding), England

Terence G Coyne ? Oct 1914 Male Hairdresser Divorced 126 2

Kucinta Report 30 Nov 2018 18:47

Bertha may have said she was born in America, but I still feel the birth I posted previously for her is the right one...

Name: Bertha Eugena Amanda Fletcher
Registration Year: 1857
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration district: Bolton
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 263

Kucinta Report 30 Nov 2018 18:52

Terence's marriage, that ended in divorce by the 1939 register?

Marriages Mar 1937
Coyne Terence G G Deighton Scarbro' 9d 757
Deighton Joan F Coyne Scarbro' 9d 757

A possible son and daughter of the marriage on FreeBMD. Won't post here as they may still be living.

ArgyllGran Report 30 Nov 2018 19:13

I'm not questioning that the Bolton birth is the correct one.
Maybe the 1901 enumerator assumed she was born in America because Harry was. Or maybe she wanted to sound more exotic!

Looking into Henry Andrew Gardiner Coyne, the librettist 1839-1900.
probably Bertha's husband, although a good bit older than her:

Presumably he couldn't marry Bertha before Gustavus's birth because he was still married to Phoebe.

His death, after (or maybe before) which Bertha moved in with George Leslie:

Well done on finding previous wife Phoebe. The 1884 review of the Gardiner Coynes at Tenby referred to Miss Bertha Fletcher as also being Mrs Gardiner Coyne. Is there a death for Phoebe before the 1881 marriage to Bertha?

ArgyllGran Report 30 Nov 2018 22:19

I can't see a death for Phoebe , nor can I see her in later censuses; with any surname.
Maybe she went back to America - though I can't see any record of that either.
Maybe she travelled under her maiden surname, which we don't know.

(EDIT: but see next post )

Henry's still calling himself married in 1881.

"Miss Bertha Fletcher" - maybe Bertha continued to use that as her stage name.

I can't see Bertha in 1881 - and still no sign of Gustavus anywhere, which is odd.

Kucinta Report 1 Dec 2018 08:59

Yes, various theatrical reviews in newspapers on FMP show that Bertha continued to perform under the name Miss Bertha Fletcher after her marriage.

Kind of Phoebe to die so opportunely and allow Gustavus's parents to marry...

ArgyllGran Report 1 Dec 2018 11:36

They didn't waste any time after her death!

Poor Phoebe - it looks as if she and Henry were already separated by 1881 - maybe his affair with Bertha had been going on for a while.

I do wish we could find Gustavus.
I wonder if he was perhaps adopted/fostered and brought up under a different name, then reverted to his birth name later - at least by 1896. But there's not even any sign of him in 1901 or 1911.

Eringobragh1916 Report 1 Dec 2018 14:23

Gardener Coyne played in Leeds in 1861 and 1865..he was also over in the IOM late 70s and early 80s Bertha Fletcher started appearing on the IOM Billing..(New Gaitey Theatre) 1881 and 1883.

Think he may have been in NY 1858 when he wrote this….

Eringobragh1916 Report 1 Dec 2018 15:01

The address 1901 Irish Census was the home of Henry G according to his Death Cert..(10 April 1900)..He died of Heart failure aged 61yrs. and his wife Bertha Eugenia was present.

ArgyllGran Report 1 Dec 2018 15:39

I love the words of the first line of that song, Eringobragh!
I can just imagine an OTT music hall entertainer giving it his/her histrionic all!

I expect the song "Leonora Leigh" mentioned earlier was along the same lines. Same writer and publisher.

Re Henry Tucker's many works:

He was a really distinguished "Entertainer" but I cannot find anything relative to his death 1900..I imagined it would be in one of the " Variety" Newspapers but nothing...Thought that would give an idea of who was at the Funeral...Gustavus is really driving me mad...!!!

ArgyllGran Report 1 Dec 2018 16:53

Further Googling re Gardiner:

Gardiner Coyne , "celebrated Irish comedian and vocalist", was at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in 1864.
In 1873 he was at the Southminster Theatre of Varieties, Edinburgh.
In 1895, "Gardiner Coyne's Combination" was at the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall in Glasgow.

Phoebe must have acted, too. This 1868 report mentions "Mrs Gardiner Coyne":

"On Thursday. 2nd April, the performance will commence with the celebrated drama, in three acts, entitled The Pearl of Killarney [with] Wandering Davy [played by] Mr Gardiner Coyne in which he will sing "The Sprig of Shillelagh", and the celebrated song (written expressly for him) named "The dear little Shamrock"...To conclude on Thursday evening with the laughable Irish farce of 'Larry's Blunders', Larry Hoolaghan, with songs [by] Mr. Gardiner Coyne...Friday, 3rd April - Grand fashionable night! for the benefit of Mr Gardiner Coyne who will appear in three characters, with sings and dances; and on which occasion Mrs. Gardiner Coyne will appear for this night only as "Norah Herbert". The performances will commence with the delightful domestic drama, entitled 'The Irishman's Home or, The Stolen Sheep!"...after which, the serio-comic drama, entitled The Irish Engagement...To conclude on Friday evening with the laughable Irish farce of 'Born To Good Luck' Paudeen O'Rafferty (with songs) - Mr. Gardiner Coyne..." . . . . and so on.
