I have closed the site down 3 times in the last approximately 8 hours since that last post

I have had to sign back in each time

and it doesn't even remember me, even though I have Remember Me ticked

Jane Report 7 Jun 2011 11:01

We pay good money for this rubbish service.

What do we have to do to get the service we pay for?

I will now go and log in again !!

InspectorGreenPen Report 7 Jun 2011 11:22

GR are aware and trying to come up with a solution. In any case, I don't think auto log-in is included in the service you are paying for.....! I couldn't find it anywhere in the t's and c'

Perhaps Phil could advise how Remember Password is programmed to work? i.e. how much is dependent on the GR site itself, and how much on your browser settings and cookies?

Jane Report 7 Jun 2011 11:58

Green pen

I am a platinum member which I believe is the most expensive membership !
What do I have to do to get auto log in ??

Not only that I keep getting this message

Sorry. An error has occurred

We can't take you to the page you wanted. The problem has been logged and our team will be working on it.

Thanks for understanding. We're really sorry for any inconvenience!

Explain that !

philmoir Advisor Report 7 Jun 2011 14:39

Hello everyone. We are trying to recreate this error in the office and having little success. I know it is happening as I did experience it on my phone browser and also my home pc while I was replying to posts on the boards. However, we're trying to narrow things down, and looking for a little assistance from anyone willing to give it (so that we can get rid of this once and for all)

To be clear, the problem I am talking about is that when you are navigating around the site you are passed to the login screen and you have to enter your email and password again. [This is not relating to pages which ask you to re-enter your password - such as when you go to My Account - this is an intended reconfirmation page].

If you are still getting the problem above, could you reply in this thread with the following information:

What did you click on before it took you to the login page?

Briefly describe what actions you had been doing before that - i.e. searching x records, reading boards, updating account details.

And for clarification (although I don't believe it is browser related) - can you also say

if you're using PC, Mac, iPad, Mobile Phone
what browser you were using
what version of the browser you have (this is usually uinder the Help - About menu option)

Our full apologies for the annoyance with this problem, and thank you for your patience.

- Phil and Chris (developers)

On the off chance it helps to know about someone who *never* has this happen (I did once a few months ago) ...

PC desktop, Windows XP

latest Firefox -- with Adblock and Noscript

I allow only the minimum necessary javascript noise on pages I use; for this one, it means that after experimenting a long time ago with what I had to allow, I have blocked (i.e. not unblocked, as I work on a block-everything default):

I never ever log out, and I never close all GR tabs/windows
(so I actually still have tabs open from before the reorg, that have been restored multiple times when I restarted Firefox, e.g. some PMs from April I have yet to get around to answering ...)

I also almost never turn my computer off other than by the restart function (I put it to sleep sometimes)

When I have to close and restart Firefox because I have burned it out from overload (or restart my computer in order to install Windows updates or the like), every few days, I crash Firefox / restart Windows, and then select the restore windows and tabs option when I restart Firefox. I have never had to log back in to GR when I do this.

I have never used a bookmark (favourites in IE) to access GR.

I did clear my cache a couple of times last week, but I never clear my history, as I use it (and sometimes use the URL autocomplete in Firefox to access a GR page).

And of course, I'm in Canada, not that this makes any difference to anything. ;-)

philmoir Advisor Report 7 Jun 2011 16:06

Thanks Janey. That is helpful. Doesn't solve it but definitely interesting to take into consideration. Maybe it is your location and we should all move to Canada!

GRMarilyn Report 7 Jun 2011 17:26

Funny ...But I google Friends Reunited and then click on Genes Reunited top right hand on page...... no signing in for me..

It might all change tomorrow ... :-S

Jane Report 7 Jun 2011 17:49

I have just unblocked pop up windows on my apple mac and touch wood it seems OK now

Jane Report 7 Jun 2011 18:56

I spoke too soon. Shut down computer came back an hour later & had to log in to Genes again

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jun 2011 19:13

Jane (and anyone else?) -- maybe you would answer the questions Phil posted up higher on this page, to try to help him figure out what is causing the problem.

InspectorGreenPen Report 7 Jun 2011 19:14

Reading some of the complaints about this I get the impression that your explanation 7 Jun 2011 14:39 is only dealing with part of the problem.

It isn't just when navigating around - people are also complaining that each time they log in to the site they are also being asked to enter their password, this is despite having ticked the box to save their password last time they logged in.

Nyx Report 7 Jun 2011 19:21

If it helps, though I can't tell you all the techie stuff,

I never log out of the site, and prior to this week the only time I have had to sign in and give password, is when my PC has closed unexpectedly.

I always shut down totally at end of day ( me and the PC lol)

Using IE8. I almost always access GR from 'favourites'...the only way I could get on earlier today was via NZ link.

InspectorGreenPen Report 7 Jun 2011 19:25

Rose, can you post the url that your favourite is pointing to?

If you right click on it, then select properties you should find it. Just copy and paste back on here.

AuntySherlock Report 7 Jun 2011 21:59

I log into from an icon on my desktop.

Use IE v8, Windows XP, service pack 3

Had to log in again this morning.
Before I clicked the GR icon I checked google mail and then A.

Monday (or was i yesterday) clicked submit and received the GR maintenance message. Lost the post and had to retype it.

Have not experienced problem of being taken back to the password screen while navigating around GR for a long time. Months in fact.
Naturally this phenonemon will now occur!!

JoyDean Report 7 Jun 2011 22:24

" ... each time they log in to the site they are also being asked to enter their password, this is despite having ticked the box to save their password last time they logged in." - exactly; except it is intermittent.

Andysmum Report 7 Jun 2011 22:38

Earlier today I was going to do what Janey has done and put in my details for elimination purposes, as it had never happened to me!! I decided it would be tempting fate and clicked on the back arrow instead to return to the Suggestions page. I got the Error Page instead!!

After trying to get a different page I went and did something else, returning to GR after about 10 minutes. I was told to log-in, but didn't bother and exited the site for several hours. When I tried again, just now, I was already logged in, so it looks as though GR is showing people as logged out, when they aren't really.

I have Windows XP, IE8 and enter the site by using the drop-down menu at the top of the screen.

jax Report 7 Jun 2011 23:18

My computer will not remember any passwords because I changed my anti virus to a free one, so I am logging into all sites at the moment including GR

I have no problem logging in and staying logged on for 16 hours but I am forever getting maintenance messages for hours on end and only being able to view a few boards at a time.

I have Windows Vista, IE8

FannyByGaslight Report 8 Jun 2011 00:01

As soon as I log on to the UK site and go to "my threads"or try any other board I get the "maintenance"message..Have done for over a week now..I dont get logged out as I cant get any pages up on here through UK,so I have logged myself out..
I use firefox and or google chrome..Neither let me on to UK...

Only by using can I use this site...and can use either browser....Pass on the other stuff..Windows something I think...PC only

Real computer lit I am not..

SylviaInCanada Report 8 Jun 2011 05:07

Also from Canada

I have had no problem navigating within the site, have not been logged out while doing that, though I ahve had the Erro Message several times.

My problem is being logged out when I shut down the site, the computer, or turn the power off. It is intermittent

Plus the site does not remember my password even though I have ticked Remember Me.

I never log out of any site, unless the site itself decides to do that.

I do Disc Cleanup regularly every 2 or 3 days.

Using desktop PC

Access GR through my Favourites

Use Windows IE6
