Sylvia you most probably tried this already but thought I'd suggest it anyway.

Have you tried changing the .com to .co.uk :-)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Jun 2011 15:35

And here's my best suggestion.

Everybody get a Gmail account (in your GR name or as close as you can get, I recommend).

That's what I use for emailing various elements of GR, and I have never once had a problem. (I know, I know, I hate people saying "well it never happens to me". But this is by way of a possible solution.)

Email recipients sometimes use over-zealous spam protectors.

If your ISP is being blocked by one of them (like spamcop), you won't be able to get through.

I had it happen to me once. My ISP, a very respectable large Canadian company, had been reported to spamcop because two fools were busy insulting each other and one of them reported the other to spamcop as a spammer, and spamcop just blocked the alleged spammer's ISP. And then basically told me, when I complained (to spamcop): tough bananas.

I also got locked out of wikipedia commenting once -- the only time I'd ever tried to comment! -- because of a war going on between Warren Kinsella (you may know the name, Sylvia) and somebody else, who kept "editing" each other's wiki entries, and he was using the same major Canadian ISP as me. So wiki locked out the hundreds of thousands of people using the same ISP.

Anyhow, it's a thought. Just use Gmail for all GR-related correspondence (a Gmail address in your account details) and you'll never miss contacts because you've changed ISPs and forgotten to change your account details -- and you might be able to email GR. ;-)

Gmail worked!

I've had a reply

Apparently GR now has several currencies they use, if you do not live in one of those countries, then you are charged in the currency of the nearest country ................ hence me in Canada being charged in USD

They have offerd me an option that suits me.

I have suggested that they charge in GBP if someone lives in a country other than one where GR does offer the currency exchange.

PLUS I have suggested that they offer the option of being charged in GBP to all non-UK members.

Thank you every one for your suggestions!

Regrettably an error in the system has occurred that has reduced this well valued member to a free member.

Message from Sylvia.

Today's result:-

They have changed my country of address to UK, as that is the only way in which I cna be charged in pounds sterling and not US dollars

They have refunded the charge of $14.45 USD to my credit card, and I can now pay in £ sterling

BUT in doing so, they have thus reduced me to a FREE member, and want me to pay £20 for 12 months

This is far more than the £9.95 minus 20% discount that I was offered 2 weeks ago, and far more than the $14.45 USD that I was charged!

I am "discussing" this with them ........ but of course it is now past closing time in the UK

If it remains at £20, I will most likely NOT rejoin

As Joy says, Sylvia is a well loved and valued member as well as being an excellent researcher who has helped many, many people over the years. I hope this situation is resolved very soon as we do not want to lose her.

A message from the original poster (whose membership has been reduced to a free one due to an error in the system):

She will be back posting provided that the renewal is at the rate quoted to her three weeks ago.

Bring back Sylvia

I think I would be annoyed if they tried to charge me in Euros when I had'nt agreed to it

Well, I don't get logged out, and I don't get error messages, and I can get to all the boards ... but I think this is the one that's going to bite me.

Not sure when my sub is up for renewal, but I don't intend to pay in USD or pay the new-member charge ... so you'd better get this one sorted out quick like, Sylvia!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 8 Jun 2011 22:28

So is this something new then? The having to pay in US dollars for Canadians?

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 8 Jun 2011 22:43

It's ridiculous that a long standing loyal member is being caused such anguish.

Firstly being charged in a currency she did not agree to and then to, in effect, have her loyalty subscription rescinded and treated as a new member.

Come on GR get it sorted ASAP, Sylvia would be greatly missed

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2011 22:43

I know, IIB, just lazy. ;)

End of July. And I've changed it -- again, I think -- to non-continuous, since the credit card info will have to change. We'll see how long that lasts.

It doesn't give me a price, though, as yet.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 8 Jun 2011 22:47

My subscription was due in April. As I have continuous membership I was charged 7 pounds 50 for the year. just checked my Visa bill. It was $12.12 Canadian.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 9 Jun 2011 00:02

So I know I'm looking for the 7 pounds 50 when it comes up, I'll keep that in mind.

http://www.xe.com/ucc/

That's the £9.95 minus 20% Sylvia mentioned.

Converts to $12.05 Cdn, $12.30 US today.

Not $14.45 US, anyhow. And when they do that, we'd be getting dinged with the loss on changing to USD and then the loss on changing to CAD.

£20 is $32.14 Cdn.

$20 more than she should have been charged. I'd think not, if it were me!

Persephone Report 9 Jun 2011 13:44

Every year I have to pay NZ$19.95 with the rate of exchange at the moment it equates to £10.03.

I am on continuous membership and have just received my renewal e-mail with the same old amount no 20% discount..

Unlike Canada we do have our flag on here ;-) perhaps I am paying for the NZ site (which I don't use)
