Could someone please help me find the marriage of James Smith to Grace Reavley. Their first child Sarah was born in Newcastle upon Tyne abt 1856. James is listed as a coalminer in the1871 census and is abt 15yrs older than Grace.

This is a Public Family Tree on ancestry ... and ti does of course need careful checking. You MUST not accept everything that is on other people's trees without double checking everyhting!

Is this your Sarah?

If so, it says that Grace's surname was Thompson

Hello Sylviain well how quick are you I did not expect an answer so fast. Well it certainly looks like the same family. I had them living in Hillgate Dunns Building in Gateshead in the 1871 census. Don't know where the Thompson comes in as I have birth certificates with Reavley on them. But thank you very much, if this is correct it is no wonder I have been unable to find them.
I am really very thankful John S.

Hi John

I'm trying to find Grace before she married .......... but no luck

I've tried looking for a Grace Reavley married to a Thompson in the 10 years before 1855, no luck

The spelling Reavley seems unusual ........ but I cna't think what else it might be!

hi Sylviain and Rose.
Here are the two birth certificates I have. First one for William James born 12/10/1859 born 32 Buckingham Street, Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne. Father James Smith mother Grace Smith formerly Reavley. James is a coalminer. The borth was registered 15/11/1859. Registrar was a George Willis.
Second certificate For Grace born 1/12/1874. Mother and father the same but mothers maiden name spelling Reeveley. Father still a coalminer, birth registered 2/1/1875. Registrar was John Pattison. The family were living in Hillgate Gateshead.
I have Grace Reavley in the 1851 census as a House servant, she was 17yrs. Address 61 Sadler St. St. Nicholas Durham. She was unmarried.
Also in the 1841 census living in Gibson St. All Saints Newcastle upon Tyne. Others at the address were Ann Reavley abt 1811, Mary Reavley abt 1821 and Grace Reavley abt 1834. I assume that Ann was the mother as I was told the could have been a difference of plus or minus of 5 yrs in the ages of the 1841 census.
Thank you both for given your time to me it is really appreciated.

well done Rose so they were not born in Newcastle as I thought. although maybe Grace was. By the way one of Grace's sons had a middle name. His name was Richard Reveley Smith born 1865. I thought maybe this was the name of her father, what are your thoughts?
Thank you once again Rose

Funny you should mention Richard. I found the following yesterday.

If you consider Ann and Mary might actually be a bit older than they say the are, this is on IGI:

Mary Reavely

Birth: 28 JUL 1815 St Hilda, South Shields, Durham, England

Parents:
Father: Richard Reavely
Mother: Ann
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:

ANN REAVELY
Birth: 20 JAN 1806

Christening: 04 MAR 1806 Ainsworth, Lancashire, England

Parents:
Father: RICHARD REAVELY
Mother: ANN

Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:

Thank you Rose for that additional census info. I have been checking the IGI for the Reavley family and I have found them in the 1800.
Richard Reavely married Ann Jeffreys 14/6/1800 at Anwick Northumberland
the children were as follows
Richard 7/5/1801 born Edlingham Northumberlad
John 10/2/1804 born Ainsworth Lancashire
Ann 20/1/1806 born Ainsworth Lancashire
Thomas 20/8/1809 born Saint Chad Over Cheshire
Henry 29/1/1812 born South Shields Durham
Mary 28/7/1815 St Hilda South Shields Durham
I am now thinking because Grace is not there that she is the daughter of one of the sons. Perhaps Richard.
In the 1841 census did it say what relationship she was to the other two ladies?
Also found Richard senior was born in Berwick Northumberland.
Still not having any luck with the marriage nor the birth of James Smith or Grace.
Rose I would like to thank you once again for your continued effort it is very much appreciated. John S.

John

The 1841 census does not give relationships between people

you have to find them on the 1851 Census to confirm any suspicion about a relationship ..... and I think you will appreciate that that can be difficult with deaths, marriages, re-marriages etc over the interening 10 years.

Also of course, the ages for most people on the 1841 census can be as much as 4 years out.

The enumerators were supposed to round down the ages of everyone over the age of 15 to the closest 5 ........... so people are older than they seem from the record.

Unfortunately, some enumerators did not do as they were told.

However, if ages shown are all multiples of 5, then you can be pretty well assured that most of them have been rounded down.

Hi Sylvia and Rose thank you so much for all of the extra you have sent me. I feel I have exhausted all of the channels I know to find these births and marriage. Any ideas on what I can do after the BMD and the IGI on Family Search. I suppose with regards to the marriage they may not have been married.
Once again I do appreciated your help thank you so very much
