Hi Everyone,

For those of you who know me well you will know i occasionally (mainly due to boredom) offer a thread up where you can get those stubborn brick walls looked at.

I HAVE to use up 460+ credits on my Scotlands People account, and i've currently ran out of rellies to search for.

Do you have someone who you cannot find? Need a cert emailing to you etc?? I am willing to search for your Scottish Ancestors and email you the certs..... obviously once the credits run dry i will stop!

I also have, The Genealogist, FMP & Ancestry world amongst others! I also have good knowledge of parish records and using/finding the OPC's (online parish clerks).

If you HAVE POSTED before on your problem, please give me a potted version of the data already found and what is missing and then also a link to your thread, (the link is in your address bar at the top of your internet page)......also please be clear about the questions you are asking, just saying 'i want to know about Mary Jones from Edinburgh' isn't really helpful....what do you want to know?

.....as for my 'team mates' please jump onboard if you find something you can help with!!

Thank you Helen,
That information is in my post as above but I was asking Tracey if she would check it out for me as she has spare credits.
I have a feeling it is too early for my Catherine.

Thanks

Hi Tracey,
Thank you very much indeed for your help.

Would it be cheeky of me to ask you to have a look at Katherine's birth and/or the 1824 marriage please?

I really do appreciate your kindness & generosity.

WayneTracey Report 22 Nov 2010 18:07

Hi Kath,

Baptisms at that time were just a few lines recorded in the Baptism book, it does not produce a birth certificate as per later births (1855 for Scottish records).

The few lines for Katherines baptism just comfirm the details already stated, with the addition of the birth (as per Ellen's post) and the address of Flesh Markel Close, Middle Church Parish, Perth, father's occupation Carter.

The marriage states,

Alexander MacKenzie, East Church Parish, Perth and Christian Angus in the West Church Parish, Daughter of Thomas Angus of Al***ethy.
Married at St Paul's Church.

I can email you both images if you wish.

Please PM your email address, do not post it here.

Tracey, I'm hurt! All those Reubens, but no PMs re my Clinic post about my Scottish troubles? ;)

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/help_clinic/thread/1249808

Well here ya go, then.

Ann(e) Rae, daughter of Henry Rae, merchant, and Anne Nicol (per death registration at SP)
- Born c March 1805 (aged 53 yrs 2 mo at death in May 1858)
- Died 1858 Wardlawhill Street, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire (I have the SP image)
- Married Richard Castle Bernard 1839 New Greyfriars, Edinburgh (I have the SP image), surname Rae so presumably single - father Henry Rae, carrier (definitely not currier)

Became Ann(e) Bernard or Barnard
(husband's family was Barnard but his baptism was recorded as Bernard in Wiltshire, he used Bernard in some official/parish records, Barnard in censuses)

Cannot find her in 1841 or 1851
- 1841, husband Richard Barnard, gold beater, was a lodger in Gorbals
- 1851, husband was in workhouse in Mere, Wiltshire, married
- 1858, husband signed her death registration in Rutherglen
- 1861, husband was in workhouse in Mere, Wiltshire, widowed; died 1869

1841 census at the address they were married from in 1839:

Name: William Rae
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815
Where born: Scotland
Occupation: Cutter I

Civil Parish: Edinburgh New Greyfriars
County: Midlothian
Address: 8 Grassmkt

Alex Rae 24 *
Alex Rae 5
Margt Rae 26
Mary Rae 3
Mary Rae 12
William Rae 26 *

* They have to be her brothers.

1851

Civil Parish: Edinburgh New Greyfriars
County: Midlothian
Address: 85 Gross Market
Name: Alexr Rae
Estimated birth year: abt 1819
Where born: Glasgow, Lanark
Occupation: Cuteler,journeman
Mary Rae 29
Henry Rae 20 - cuteler, journeman - another brother
Robert Rae 8

Civil Parish: Glasgow St James
County: Lanarkshire
Name: Wm Rae
Estimated birth year: abt 1811
Where born: Glasgow
Occupation: Cutler

(Maybe a gold beater met cutlers professionally ...)

What I really want to know is whether Richard and Ann had any children, who would be half-siblings of my grx2 grandparent.

I can't find Ann(e) Bernard/Barnard in the 1841 or 1851 (she would have been in Scotland in 1841 at least, surely).

I can't find any births
- there are a load of births to a Richard Bernard and Elizabeth Robertson before the 1839 marriage to Ann Rae -- not him, she is Betsy Barnard, widow of coal miner, in 1851
- wife Catherine Gardiner/Gardener is out: births up to 1840
- wife Janet Snadon is likely out: births 1811, 1813, 1820, Clackmannan
(Richard had one child that I know of in England by marriage there, 1819 Bristol)

So in all likelihood there were no births, but if I could find Ann in a census, I'd know!

So that's the biggie -- where is she in 41 and 51.

I'd hoped that finding her birth/parents might tell me where she was born, for searching censuses, but no luck. But it does seem her brothers were born in Glasgow, and she's older, so likely her too.

............. No rush. ;)
