Can someone help me. John & Martha Bennett 1861/71/81/91 census living in Shrewsbury Shropshire with their 10 children they then moved to Small Heath Birmingham and in the 1911 census Martha a widow is living with 8 children (she states she has had 9 children 8 iving) but she did have 10 children baptised at her local church in Shrewsbury.
My problem is she had a daughter Lucy 1867 (who was my g.Grandmother) who married in 1895 to William Shotton and is listed with him in the 1901 & 1911 census forms. So why is Lucy listed in the 1901 census living next door to her parents with her married sister Emily and in the 1911 census back living with her mother Martha.
Also my Lucy died in 1940 and was buried in Shrewsbury Cemetery, yet the 'other' Lucy was buried in Yardley Green Cemetery in 1913 ?
All the other names/dates for her siblings are correct

it seems to be common practice back then to name a chikld after one who had died - in my Dad's family, baby Nancy died and when the next little girl was born the children all said "We have another Nancy" so she was called Nancy too

No she was not named after a child which had died as they were both alive 1901/1911 census

It's possible that she was recorded on 1901 and 1911 with husband even though she wasn't actually in the house! Wouldn't explain 2 Lucys' deaths though. I'm assuming they have same birth year parents' details on the gravestones, hence the puzzle? How did you find out about the other Lucy's burial?

The above marriage is not the correct couple.
They have the same birth year same name Lucy Bennett both born in Shrewsbury to John & Martha Bennett, but my Lucy married William Shotton and the 'other Lucy' never married but according to a person I have been in contact with through GR the 'other' Lucy was living at 237 Arthur Street Aston B/ham when she died; which is the same house as my Lucy's family.
Please can one of you knowledgeable people out there explain this to me, I am at a loss to understand.

This is the 1913 death I take it - the same age as you say. This is very strange isn't it.

Deaths Jun 1913

Bennett Lucy 46 Birmingham 6d 224

I can only see one birth though:

Births Mar 1867
Bennett Lucy Shrewsbury 6a 671

Sorry to be a bit dim, but could you just re-cap please? Not sure why you think the Lucy who died 1913 is daughter to John and Martha.

The other person I have been in touch with re: Bennett family has sent me a copy of the internment details which states "Lucy Bennett 46 - 21 May 1913 237 Arthur Street Aston" This is the house that 'my' Lucy's parents were living in at that time.

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 10:25

Forgot to mention that when Lucy married, she married under the name of Louisa Bennett both she and William signed with the mark of a X, the registrar told me that it was quite common for spelling mistakes because the people concerned could not read or write, but the fathers details are correct for both parties, so I have got the right couple.

There is only ever one Lucy as far as I can see. Is there any possible chance that your Lucy is someone else entirely??

How can I have the wrong Lucy when I have all her details?

It was just a theory!

I know it's a pain to ask so much, but you have such a mystery.

Firstly, you obviously have details of marriage and death for your Lucy, and her father's name from that. How have you linked her to this John and Martha?

Now you know how I feel,-- She was born Lucy and she died Lucy, the family never moved far except for when her parents took the family to live in Aston B/ham and this was after Lucy married.
In the 1901 census it says she was born in Brookhouse it should have read Workhouse.
Her baptisim and that of her siblings are all recorded at their parish Church, St.Michaels Church Shrewsbury

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 31 Mar 2010 12:33

So, I take it you are 100% certain that her family moved to Birmingham? Going a bit mad here!
Are you sure about that workhouse birthplace? Have never seen that before.
