Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 18:47

I think I would be inclined to get this birth cert

Births Dec 1868 (>99%)

BENNETT Louisa Wellington, Sh. 6a 788

but just as another thought, do you know where Lucy is buried? I was just thinking that other members of the family might be buried in the same graveyard, which might give a clue?

Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 18:52

Yes Lucy is buried in Shrewsbury Cemetery in an unpurchased grave with 2 other people, no headstone, only a vase that my parents purchased when we found the grave.
Just because Lucy died in Wellington does not mean she was born there that was where the poor house was at that time.
I still cannot understand why she was Lucy on her daughters birth certificate and Lucy on her death certificate.

Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 22:07

The Louisa Bennett born Wellington Dec 1868
appears in the 1871 Census with parents Richard & Margaret Bennett.
My Lucy's father was called John so this cannot be the correct one, I cannot find this family in the 1881 census.
any more suggestions PLEASE!!!!

Could it be the one i found on IGI? Mother Martha then?

Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 22:24

I have tried everything and cannot find another Lucy (Louisa) Bennett born around 1867 who has a father called John only the one I had originally.
I accept that for years I have been looking for the wrong Lucy but there is nowhere else to look, don't say I have to give up and I have only got as far as my G.Grandmother?
By the way there is a record of a William Shotton death j.f.m. 1939 Wellington Salop
I'm off to bed now worn out/frustrated/tired/feel like giving up etc. unless you can help me.
I do appreciate the effort you have put in up to now.

Hi

The one I added aon the first page of this post...

Sandra

Sandra Report 1 Apr 2010 08:17

I use 'find my past' to look up births/census/marriages/deaths etc. and I cannot find a Louise Benett - I will try again and if possible (grand -daughter permitting) I will order birth certificate today.
Wish me luck - I need it - I think April Fools day came early for me!
Marionfromscotland - the Lucy you found, daughter of John & Martha is the one I thought was my g.grandmother - big mistake.

Just popping back to see what's happening - what a lot of responses! However, all this must be really frustrating for you Sandra.
Sorry if I've missed this, but have you said who the witnesses are on Lucy & William's marriage cert? I suppose they offer no clues?

She doesn't appear to have been registered, can't find her on Free BMD and as I said earlier it wasn't compulsory until 1875.

What do I do if she was not registered?

Brummiejan - I did say the witnesses to the wedding were Fred McGliston & Gertude Shotton.

It means finding a baptism record. Do you live in the area?

This is another possibility - it does fit in with the Atcham connection. Not much use though I must say.

I live in Shrewsbury do I go to my local library to look for parish records? what parish do you suggest I look for ?
I can find what might be Louise/Lucy in 1871 with her parents and then in 1881 working as a Servant as Lucy Bennett
but I can find no record of her parents John & Sarah or Lucy in any other census records. Sorry I have found them in 1881 but they have aged a lot, why do people lie on the census forms?

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 1 Apr 2010 13:44

Hi Sandra

Just popped on for a mo.
Yes go to the library and ask there. you might get somebody who is really helpfull. There might even be a book of MI's to look through.

I'll look back later.

Marion

Sandra Report 1 Apr 2010 14:54

Marion
What are MI's?

I just cannot understand why she is Lucy on all the census returns except on the 1871 one where she is Louise.
She was Lucy on her daughters birth certificate (profession Domestic Servant) Lucy on her death certificate which parish shall I look up? she says birthplace Cressage on the 1881 census.
Do I look for Louise Louisa or Lucy?
