As a "newbie" I find this all very confusin' anyway, there's not really much in the way of "help" for navigating, you just gotta fumble your way around! So my questions are :-
1) what's a PM?
2) why don't people remove old threads? ( or am I being too logical)
3) if your given a "hot match" by the site, could this be an "old thread" ????????
4) have I wasted my money?

- help

Hey Andrea.

To answer your questions in short....

1) A private message
2) So other people can read the data if they are connected
3) No hot matches are old threads, merely a person similar or the same as the person you have
4) Depends on which membership you have?

Now the long version.....

1) To pm someone click on their name and you will be given a new page fill in the bits you see and send!

2) Old threads are annoying for us all.... basically, before the boards became as they are now and threaded, they were just merely one hit shout outs, you could not reply to them directly (you had to reply direct to the person who sent the message) This is why there are alot of messages out there with no replies but dated ALONG time ago....it's not because we ignored them or that there were no answers, just that the answers were all hidden. They stay on the system incase someone else is researching the same family...(and it does happen)

3) The hot matches can be a little hit and miss, we have all noticed in recent times that they are not as 'hot' as they use to be. There could be just the first name the same or the area the same, or even just birth year.... i myself have had some very weird not so hot matches recently!!! These are never old threads tho!

4) You have not wasted your money depending on what you have done with it! We all on the main here just go for the basic membership ( i believe it's now £9.95 for 6 months) ...and use others sites for our research. Genes likes to use a buy credit system which can prove expensive.... there are other options on other sites whereby full membership gets you unlimited access to all rercords. I believe here even full membership doesn't get you that.... i might be wrong!!

I hope this helps you a little??

Tracey xx
