In 1881 the following Lucas children lived with their parents Henry William/Lydia Rhoda in Anchor Yard, St Luke district of Finsbury.

Lydia Rhoda Lucas - born Jan/Mar 1870 St Luke
Jane Elizabeth Lucas - born Apr/Jun 1872 St Luke
Annie Louise Lucas - born Jan/Mar 1880 St Luke

and also my G Grandfather
Henry William Lucas - born Apr 1877 Ironmonger Row, St Luke

I know about my G Grandfather, but cannot find anything about his 3 sisters. I have tried to use the 1911 census to find possible marriages but to no avail. There is a good chance they were all orphaned in 1886 as my G Grandfather ended up in a school for destitute boys. The 3 girls could have then gone anywhere!

Any help on finding deaths or marriages for the 3 sisters would be greatly appreciated.

If you look at freebmd there are several Lydias and Janes but I think you would have to decide which was the most likely.

Cynthia,
I can confirm that I splashed out on the marriage certificate for this one and it is NOT my Annie Louise Lucas!

On Ancestry the following marriage:-

Jane Elizabeth Lucas to James Theodore Brown

Oct-Dec 1892
St. Saviour, Southwark
1d 347

She is on 1901 census

Paul Report 8 Mar 2009 18:43

OK,
The father of Annie Louise Lucas married in Kensington 1906 was David Lucas
The father of Jane Elizabeth Lucas married in St Saviour 1892 was Benjamin Joseph Lucas
I am looking for a father of Henry William Lucas.

In the 1911 census I have not found any Lydia, Jane or Annies with the right birth date or birthplace of St Lukes. I shall go back to the 1901 census again to see if there are any I missed the first time around.

Hello detectives - I still have not got anywhere in tracing my Lucas relatives. Can anyone find any clues as to what happened to the Lucas sisters?

Gai Report 29 Jan 2011 15:38

Just a thought Paul - did their mother re-marry? I had a similar problem and found them on a census with another surname (actually, the mother in my case didn't actually marry the second time, but the she and the children were recorded with the chap's name).

I note on the 1811 both Lydia (mother) and Lydia (daughter) are recorded as Rhoda. Have you seen this marriage:

Catherine,
No wonder it was hard to find them in 1891 if they gave places of birth as "East, London" and "N".
I would be interested to know the source of your 1891 census information and constable is the surname above - not Caretabb!

There must be a juvenile court record of how the children were found homes. Henry William Lucas ended up at Church Farm Industrial school Barnet where he learnt to be a butcher.

Hi Paul

I just search for Henry and after finding him in the schol for boys I reckoned that the girls may be in a similar situation. It is unlikely that the girls would be providing the census information and others may not have the exact details.

As for records about the schools etc, I think you should now change the title of this posting to something pertinent about how to find the school information. I am sure there will be people on here who can provide guidance.

Hi Catherine,
Yes the details of year of birth on the census seem to be a little out when the children are no longer living with parents. Fortunately on the 1911 census Henry William Lucas knew all his birth details - even giving the road he was born in, so I had a definite link back to his sisters. His father died in 1886 and the mother probably 1881 - the death certificate I have is not conclusive.

I need to concentrate on the sisters - maybe Annie to find a marriage and a 1901 census entry. However if she dropped the Louise/Louisa middle name after being adopted then it will be a hard task as Annie Lucas is a very common name in London.

Thanks for all your help so far

Catherine

Catherine Report 30 Jan 2011 14:42

You may also have to consider Annie as Constable.

Catherine

Paul Report 31 Jan 2011 19:10

Assuming Annie did lose her middle name after adoption there is a possible marriage

Sep 1897 Bethnal Green 1c 426

Annie Lucas
Henry Luke Cooksley

I have run out of credit to look at the 1911 census for them to see any detail!

For info

Name: Annie Lucas
Age: 19
Estimated birth year: abt 1878
Spouse Name: Henry Luke Cooksley
Spouse Age: 22
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 19 Jul 1897
Parish: St Philip, Bethnal Green
County: London
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: William Lucas - slaughterman
Spouse Father Name: Henry Luke Cooksley

Annie gives 199 Brick Lane as her address

No mention of father being deceased

So rule this one out without looking at 1911

Paul

Paul Report 31 Jan 2011 19:24

Thanks
Info doesnt quite fit as father was Henry William Lucas - dustman However she was only about 7 years old when he died and was then adopted.
