A very interesting letter, appears J C Parkinson proported to be a friend of Charles Dickens!!

He made Chairman of the Reform Club, and makes mention of the Times article 26th Oct 1908, i assume thats the same one Maureen has found you.

He died 24th October 1908.

So you'll need to find more about his Chairmanship now.

BTW ..... these are only Indexes of Probate or Administrations granted ................

each one tells you

..... name and address of deceased
..... date and place of death
..... name(s) and address(es) or eprsons granted probate or administration
..... amount of money in estate (or effects)

That is all ...... you have to buy the will to find out any more, such as who actually inherited the money.

Probate is granted to the eprson who has applied for it ........ usually the surviving spouse, child(ren), and / or a solicitor or lawyer.

This is how wikipedia explains it:-

"Probate is the legal process of administering the estate of a deceased person by resolving all claims and distributing the deceased person's property under the valid will. A surrogate court decides the validity of a testator's will. A probate interprets the instructions of the deceased, decides the executor as the personal representative of the estate, and adjudicates the interests of heirs and other parties who may have claims against the estate.

As with any legal proceeding, there are technical aspects to probate and trust administration: Creditors need to be notified and legal notices published. Trustees need to be guided in how and when to distribute assets and how to take creditors rights into account. A Petition to appoint a personal representative may need to be filed and Letters of Administration obtained.

In England and Wales, Northern Ireland, Commonwealth countries (common law jurisdictions), Ireland and in the U.S., probate ("official proving of a will") is obtained by executors of a will while Letters of Administration are granted where there are no executors"

"Where a person dies leaving a will appointing an executor, and that executor validly disposes of the property of the deceased within England and Wales, then the estate will go to probate. Most of our ancestors probably did not make wills ................. I don't know about yours, but mine were mainly lowly Ag Labs and lace makers!

I have found a marriage in the Bolton Chronicle about Mr Abraham Parkinson Holroyd & Sarah Parkinson, is there any way I can find the brides mothers name?

But you still aren't giving information!

When might this marriage have been, for starters?

Is there a known conneciton with the people in this thread, and if so, what?

Holroyd is the groom's name? so I'm not seeing the connection off the top.

The bride's mother's name won't be on any record (unless she happened to be a witness, on the marriage certificate).

But with info like her age and father's name ... and the date of the marriage ... it might be possible to find her in a census as a child, find her birth / parents' marriage ...

The marriage was in 1824, I was wondering if Sarah who was baptized about 1805, was the daughter of Abraham Parkinson & Mary Greenwood.

The Newspaper Article states that Sarah was the daughter of Abraham Parkinson, Wine Merchant of Crimbles House (Bolton Chronicle Sat Oct 9 1824)

So the date *was* 1824??

Looks like the marriage to Keturah Martin was a second marriage for Mr Holroyd then.

There is no record on free uk bdm either. Do you think if I contacted the Church I be able to get a record from them?

Remember ... FreeBMD only starts when registration did, 1837. An 1824 marriage would not appear in the GRO index, because it didn't exist.

You want the parish record -- I don't know Yorkshire so I don't know where they'd be found now. Hopefully somebody will come along who does, when they wake up. ;)

Just wondering whether you've accounted for the daughters of the couple as mentioned in the marriage announcement -- did they in fact have a daughter Sarah?

No, I have not searched for any information yet.

I have just started looking for the daughters of Abraham & Mary marriages, as the names are quite common, I am going through census' to see if I can 'marry' some of them up!!

Elizabeth 1799, Mary 1801, Hannah 1803, Sarah 1805 and Ann 1810

I did not have the 1841 or 1851 Census on Mary.

Where do you have the names/birthdates of the daughters from?

It occurred to me, duh, that I should have searched the IGI for Sarah Parkinson daughter of Abraham *and Mary*, but now all I'm getting is error messages ...

You can also try searching it for birth/baptism, no name, father Abraham Parkinson, mother Mary, Yorkshire, 1805 +/- 10 yrs, say, if it ever decides to work.

I cannot remember at the present time where the names came from, will have to look through my records.

My gggg grandfather was Abraham born 1807, he was a Wine Merchant when he first arrived in Australia, he was the only one that left England, probably the black sheep!!

I had been told that the family were well to do by a gg aunt

Thanks for the Census, I think that you have just given me Anne's marriage, found on IGI Wm Charles Copperthwaite m Ann Parkinson on the 1 Aug 1831, will check further but there is a possibility it is correct.
