Before this thread closes. I'd just like to say pointing me in the direction of Victor's Service record has proved most informative. I was then able to find his brother Reginald Alfred Smith b 28Jan 1899, service record as well.
Reg was only 5' 2" and 104 lbs. He was captured by the Germans at St Quentin, so was fortunate to have survived the war. Yet it would appear from research so far that neither brother married, so the effects probably lasted their life time!
