Thanks for this everyone. I am trying to take it all in. I don't know what happened to Andrew Connelly or if Catherine Garland and he had any children. Catherine Garland died on her birthday! So Jessies parents were Margaret Rutherford and James Cliff but they didn't marry?
Margaret's parents were Jean Smeaton and James ?.
Do you think that Catherine Edison 1833 was born Rutherford and is the same person as Catherine Addison and is Jessies sister? Where did the name Addison come from?
I haven't looked at the McGregors yet but will do so tomorrow. Thanks so much for this.

Aileen: Where did you get this information from?:
1907 STEWART MARY MCGREGOR ROBERTSON F 60 ST ANDREW (DUNDEE) DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS It seems that Mary McGregor and James Stewart weren't married. Did she marry William Robertson? He seems to have disappeared after this.
On William McGregor's birth cert it says William McGregor or Stewart illegimate so we don't know who William's dad was but at least we know his grandparents. Thanks

Aileen

Aileen Report 20 Nov 2010 09:01

Info was from Scotland'sPeople.

I can't find a marriage for Mary and William Robertson.

Catherine Edison/ Addison was Jessie's sister or half sister and Arthur Grassie/Gracey was her half brother.

Rosalinda Report 20 Nov 2010 10:15

Thanks Aileen. Please could you tell me why it shows 1907. What happened that year?

I have been looking for William McGregor but he has been on the census as Stewart. William married at the turn of the century but I don't know the date or who to. He joined the scots fusilers and fought in the 1st ww and later ww2 in the RAF. So we thought of sending for his army records to see if it gives any details.

Although we know that those childrren weren't James Stewarts they may not have the same dad as each other!

Aileen Report 20 Nov 2010 13:29

Sorry
1907 was Mary McGregor Stewart Robertsons death....cert gives her parents as Peter and Catherine McGregor ms McLeish and is witnessed by Jessie Garland (daughter).
I haven't as yet found any marriage for William. I'm fairly sure he didn't marry Catherine. Do you have David's birth cert?....if he married David's mother date and place of marriage should be on it

Rosalinda Report 20 Nov 2010 16:00

I would like to trace David Dickie McGregors birth. He was born in Scotland probably in Dundee or nearby. He died in May 1938 aged 8. Please could someone check if this birth is registered and the ref number so that I can send away for his birth cert. Thanks

rootgatherer Report 23 Nov 2010 20:40

Any one of these two will do. It is not uncommon for a birth to be registered in the registration district of the hospital that he was born in and also the registration district where the Mum lived.

Just wondering Linda, if when you were looking up some of the other births, did you check the entry to see if it had an RCE (Register of Corrected Entries) attached. Often in the case of illegitimacy, the mother went to court to prove paternity. Sometimes this shows not only the father's name but also gives an address.

Rosalinda

Rosalinda Report 23 Nov 2010 21:12

Thanks. No I didn't know about RCE. I will look out for it.

Rootgatherer, where did you find the birth for David? I have been looking for it for a while.

Rosalinda

Rosalinda Report 6 Dec 2010 17:49

Birth cert shows: David Dickie McGregor born 31/10/1929 dad William McGregor labourer address 208 seagate dundee mum jane mcgregor MS Thompson 1928 July 23rd fewry ireland. I'm not sure of the initial letter of fewry-it could be any other letter.

Does this mean they got married in Ireland?

Aileen

Aileen Report 6 Dec 2010 18:24

That would be correct.....if they were being truthful....some unmarried people give fictious date and place of marriage.

Rosalinda

Rosalinda Report 6 Dec 2010 18:32

How do I get a copy of the marriage cert then? Please could you advise on which website to use for irish marriage certs. Thanks

rootgatherer Report 6 Dec 2010 21:24

Linda, you can look here although it doesn't look hopeful!

https://beta.familysearch.org/

As Aileen has said, sometimes the date and place of marriege were ficticious.

Hello, I wonder if anyone can check the scottish 1911 census for me please. I am looking for William McGregor born Blairgowrie 1885. He married early 1900's and had a son and a daughter. That's all I know. He may have been living in Dundee. Thanks

Linda, there are no subscriptions available for that census. You need to buy credits for Scotlandspeople and search there.
