Quote 'Chrissie, is that Ernest Doar one of my rellies?'

We will never know Rob, I don't know who his parents were as he seems to be in hospital in 1911. I followed a Doar living in Sandiacre backwards (I can't find a death and he was on the electoral role in 2002 he would now be 75) until I got to Ernest. The possibly living Doar though doesn't appear to have had any children and got married quite late in life.

I have had a break to finish my marking and get some tax returns done.

Wot is this stuff re George Ricottie Cheese Doar marrying Grace Seal?

I need a new piece of paper to get it all down.

Phew!

From the Beresford website (my next dor neighbours are Berefords!)

George married Grace SEAL [3276] [MRIN: 1036], daughter of John SEAL [3278]
and Unknown, about 1900.1069 Grace was born Cal 1880 in Lanes (Lancs?) Salford.338

I still wouldn't rely on this.

Christine, what did you mean by this?

"On reflection though, we think that Henry Snape probably died in 1875 in Prestwich don't we? The death for Henry Snape in June 1878 in Preston that we first favoured gave a different fathers name to the one on the marriage cert."

I wasn't aware that Robert had the death cert of Henry Snape, or the marriage cert of Henry to Elizabeth Hughes.

Or that either of those deaths gave a father's name. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Meg
I don't know whether this link will work for you but it is the marriage certificate of Henry Snape to Sarah Elizabeth Hughes March 27th 1869 at St Phillips in Salford . Henry living at 10 and Sarah Elizabeth living at no 12 James Street. Henry Snape gives his father as Henry Snape (Shoemaker).

If the links don't work I have copies Meg. If you would like to see them and would trust me with your e-mail address I would be happy to send them to you.

There were 2 possible deaths for Henry Snape before Sarah Elizabeth married George Dean on August 19th 1878 in St Philips in Manchester. It was registered under Sarah Elizabeth Snape and Sarah Elizabeth Hughes on the Lancs BMD.

These are the two most likely deaths for Henry Snape -

Deaths Jun 1878
SNAPE Henry 49 Preston 8e 438

Deaths Jun 1875
Snape Henry 46 Prestwich 8d 246

We favoured the Preston one but someone (I can't remember which page it is on now) found a reference for the Preston death and it gave that Henry Snape's father as Thomas.

Found the reference Meg to Henry Snape death. It was posted on page 5 by Lancashire Ann -

'the burial of the 1878 Henry Snape

Burial: 2 May 1878 St Leonard, Walton le Dale, Lancashire, England
Henry Snape - Son of Thomas Snape
Age: 49 years
Abode: Birch House Walton le Dale
Notes: [Father recorded as] the late Thomas Snape
Buried by: J. C. Kershaw
Register: Burials 1861 - 1880, Page 177, Entry 1412
Source: LDS Film 1526061

I think if he was married it would have said 'wife of'

Followed by -

If henry Snape was 40 in 1869 could this one be his death - possibly a more likely area than Preston

Deaths Jun 1875 (>99%)
Snape Henry 46 Prestwich 8d 246

it's only when you read someone else's copy of what you wrote that you notice the mistake!!

I rather think I should have put 'HUSBAND of''

Thank you mary, that lets those two death out then.
The one that died in 1873 Preston was only 32 though. Henry's age was given as 40 on the marriage in 1869.

Christine2 Report 27 Jan 2011 17:05

I wonder if Sarah Elizabeth married again before he died? Could you get divorced in those days on the grounds of your husband going to prison for his awful crime? This one looked a possibility?

Thanks for all those reminders Christine.

That latest death certainly ties in age-wise, but I can't find him in that area on the censuses.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 30 Jan 2011 16:22

did we not say at some point that the Henry Snape who went to prison was the wrong age for Robert's henry

Christine2

Christine2 Report 30 Jan 2011 16:29

I thought the one who went to prison was about 40 ish Ann?
He was 40 on the marriage in 1869 and the one who went to prison went in about 1870/1971.

p.s. We did think at first that he might not be because of his age, before we found the marriage, because Sarah Elizabeth was only 18.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 30 Jan 2011 21:31

I think that was the right marriage - Henry 40 and Sarah Elizabeth 18. They don't seem to have had any children, but I never found them together on a census.

So that ties in with Henry being 43 when committed to prison.

Anybody any more on the Seals?
