Potty sounds like it could be William and Elizabeth as he is now a Merchants Clerk on that census and Samuel is an Elementry Teacher. Also it is Hannah Kelly and not Harriet but it was abrieviated on the other census so could have been Hannah! :-(

Can't find anything on John Ebenezer Kelly after the 1881 census or any of his family. Perhaps they came over to Cherilyn's part of the world???

Potty

Potty Report 7 Jul 2011 17:02

No luck finding the family in 1861.

Cherilyn,

Shebbear College has a website - it might be worth contacting them to see if they have any baptism records. I am sure all the children would have been baptised and in the 1851 the family is living next door to Jacob H Prior, Bible Christian Minister.

Potty I live just up the road to the college. The births are registered in Torrington which would be right. There are loads of bible christian chapels round here and Black Torrington is only 2 miles away from Shebbear. I live in Buckland Filleigh and can see the college from the front of our property. I have also rung the bells in Shebbear and Black Torrington and Torrington.

Cherilyn Report 8 Jul 2011 05:01

Hi Potty & Mel, thanks again for your work on this one.

So now there's Samuel! And Harriet is Hannah...but I can't find her birth in Devon...not Torrington anyway, and the only one is middle initial H, not M. Could it read Han'h H?

No sign of Samuel in 1881.

What are the chances the college will have christening records? Really???

Yes Mel, John Ebenezer & Clara went to NZ sometime after 1881 and then to South Australia in 1888. John died there a few years later and Clara and her children moved to Western Australia (where I am!)

Also still looking for...

William Charles KELLY b. 1843 Shaldon, Devon
and
Thomas KELLY b. 1845 Shaldon, Devon

in Censuses 1861+

and also William b. 1807 with wife Elizabeth b. 1810 in 1861 Census :-)

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 8 Jul 2011 12:14

Been looking all morning for William and Elizabeth on the 1861 with no luck.

I did put up a 1861 census for a possible Thomas born 1845 Devon and came up with a lodger in Middlesex lodging with a shoemaker and he was down as a shoemaker too. This Mr. Walker's wife was born in Devonshire and after Thomas's name it only has Devonshire.

I am wondering if this 1861 census is one of the missing ones or maybe they were traveling to Glous then??? It just seems very strange that we can't find any of them on this census :-(

So I think we need to put down this family and their children that we have found over the years and where they were born so us looker can remember the years of birth for them! I am getting old and can't always remember :-S

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 8 Jul 2011 13:55

Well done! Very clever of you to find this.

How bizarre! Perhaps he was on a Sabbatical somewhere?!

They certainly did get around...does it state an occupation for mother 'Elztt'?

I notice this one makes Samuel 2 yrs younger than Hannah, whereas in 1871 he is shown as 17 and she as 18...did they vary the month Census was taken?

I still can't find a birth for Hannah in Devon....does this census still say that's where she was born?

Great work!!!

I am curious as to why Wm left the church...seems to have been between 1851 and 1861.

In any case I have gone from thinking John Ebenezer had only 2 brothers, to finding a further 3 sisters and 2 brothers! :-D

Potty

Potty Report 8 Jul 2011 14:12

The 1861 census was on 7th April and the 1871 on the 2nd April - so if the ages on both censuses are correct, one of them must have been born between those two dates.
