Hi

It was a 'last chance' look in the Dursley Workhouse.

Ada Lilly Workman had 5 older siblings & in 1901 they were in the Workhuse in Thornbury.

Their mother Sarah Ann Workman was living in 1901 with her new partner William Beckerton. in Alderley, just outside Wotton under Edge ( following the death of her husband in 1897 - Joseph Workman )

I have looked at all the family members that I know of to see if Ada was with any of them in 1901 - but cant find her anywhere.

Looking at the childrens births - although they were all born either Charfield or Wotton U Edge, the older 5, were registered Thornbury & Ada was registered Dursley - so I wondered if she had been sent to the workhouse there.....

I dont know where else to look for her.

Gillian Report 1 Dec 2011 14:17

your 1911 census is not MY Ada Workman...

The family were re-united somewhere between 1901 & 1911 and they end up in Pontypridd, S.Wales.

Adas mum married William Beckerton in 1902 and Ada hasthe name Ada Beckerton in 1911 census

However - when she marries in 1919 in W.U.E and gives her name as Ada Lilly Workman - father Joseph Workman deceased.

If this is Joseph's death and her is the father, then Sarah must have had a longer than normal pregnancy?

Deaths Jun 1897 Workman Joseph 38 Thornbury 6a 126

Gillian Report 1 Dec 2011 14:25

Yep - I have her birth cert and it gives no fathers name - so she was illigitimate.

I have no idea where she is in 1901. I know her mum and soon to be step-dad are in Alderley, W.u E. and her siblings are in the workhouse in Thornbury.

On the 1911 she is recorded as William's daughter whereas Sarah's daughter from her marriage to Joseph is recorded as William's step daughter.

Gillian

Gillian Report 1 Dec 2011 14:37

I think it is quite possible that she is in fact William Beckertons daughter - however, she was born Ada Lilly Workman and married as Ada Lilly Workman - father Joseph Workman deceased.

So - either she wasnt Williams daughter, but shown as such on the 1911 census ( whilst whe was school age )......and in fact her mother had had a relationship with someone uinknown after her husband, Joseph had died.

Or - she was in fact William Beckertons daughter - but her mother wasnt married to him until 2-3yrs after her birth - so leagally her name was still Workman ( she may have 're-invented' Joseph Workman )- her mothers 1st husband - just for the purpose of her wedding cert.........

I dont as yet know the answer. I'm afraid.

Still leaves the puzzle as to where she was in 1901 tho

I have just had a thought

Is it possible please to find out who was living in Dyers Brook
( cottage / house) Wooton under Edge in 1901 census?

Ada lilys mum gave that as her address in 1900 when Ada was baptised

Many thanks

I think its area rather than a particular house as they are separate households

Gillian

Shirley - thank you SO much for looking -

I guess that Dyers Brook is a street then - and not just a house ( as I had thought )??
4 houses in Dyers Brook ( street) - is that correct please?

Thanks again
Gill

I think that if Ada was William's child she was more likely to be living with a relative in 1901 as opposed to the workhouse like Joseph's children. It may be that she is lurking in the 1901 with a different surname but I just can't see a possibility!

If this is William before he married Sarah then it looks like Ada was named for one of his sisters?

I wonder .but it can only be a ??, whether she was in fact with William and Sarah but they didnt give her details because of the different surnames. Mind you they could have listed her as a Beckerton !!

She certainly doesnt show up on a type of search
