1861 census for Llandefalley brecknock has a John Ricketts born 1810, farmer of 510 acres married with a houseful of relatives/servants. One of them was Marriann Davies. I'm thinking she could have had his son and called him John Ricketts Davies. Is this possible I wonder?

Even though the fathers were recorded as deceased, they still would have had names.........what were they?

william Report 21 Sep 2012 13:02

There are no names, just says deceased for both of them

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 21 Sep 2012 13:04

So probably not known............which would suggest that both were illegitimate

Ah right! Ok so now I have to try to find their mothers. This is going to be hard I think, but I'm always up for a challenge!
At least I've got a little bit more information for my tree.

I have found records of Annie Bufton attending Llanbister Cantal School in 1880s. I can't seem to find anything in the 1881 census for her. Can anyone help?

I have a bit of an update. I think the witnesses on the marriage certificate (Thomas and Sarah Ann Jones) could have been sister and brother in law to John. They were married in Pontypridd in June 1883. I have found out John Ricketts Davies was born in March 1861. And I am going with the theory that he and Annie Bufton were both illigitimate. I think Johns father could have been a local farmer called John Ricketts. I am struggling to find anything about either of them before they married. BMD Records show Annie was born in 1867 in Rhayader, but different census records give her birthplace as Talachddu or Llanbadarn Fawr or Radnorshire!!! Is it worth me buying their birth certificates? What information is on a birth certificate, bearing in mind their marriage certificate hasn't helped me find their parents names.

Just found this baptism record for John.

John Ricketts
Davies

Llandyfalle
Brecknockshire
Fathers forename William
Mothers forename Catherine

So I presume he wasn't illigitimate after all

Hello Ashleigh, welcome to the boards.

Seeing as it's a good few months since William posted he mightn't be looking back here for replies. If you click on his name you can send him a direct message via the Genes message system.
