Thanks everyone ... getting quite a bit of info here.
Gins - No, not my tree on Ancestry. I'm not the ALSTON. I'm researching for an old (80 yrs) family friend (known me since before I was born).
But I did notice that there are 3 trees on Ancestry who have the details wrong. They've assumed that it was the girl (Beryl born 1923) who drowned at Magnetic Island, when in fact it was Eric (born 1919). Perhaps I should tell them?
Yes, Frank and Hugh were brothers, and from what I've discovered the past couple of days, both families moved to Brisbane in 1949 and lived near the Ascot Racecourse. They were into racehorses.
Chris - thanks I hadn't been able to find when they came back from England. Only gone 5 months huh? Long time to take a 13 year old out of school !
Thanks all Cheers Robyn

Pasted from above: "Reports are that she married a John Donald TOOTH in 1944, but I can't find anything on that either." "Married in Ingham, Queensland. But it looks like it was April 1946 now."
Confusion over Robyn...
Beryl Alston was still unmarried between 1944 and 1946
Beryl Frances Alston Married John Donald Tooth on Thurs 10 Apr 1947!

Thanks Anne, Yes, the paper got it wrong. It was definitely Eric, aged 7. This was confirmed in a later article.
Would love something on the birth, and subsequent marriage of Beryl though. Can't seem to find anything, other than she was 13 when she travelled with her parents, Frank and Kate, to England in 1936.
Reports are that she married a John Donald TOOTH in 1944, but I can't find anything on that either.
Back to the drawing board I guess. Thanks everyone for your hard work. I certainly have more today than I had a couple of days ago. Well done. Thanks.
Cheers Robyn

Yeah, sorry. Should I have spelled Queensland in full? Thought I was posting to the Aussie .com.au site
Yes we have the parent's marriage ... 30 Jan 1915. Don't know where, but assume Ingham, North Queensland, as that's where they were living at the time.
I suppose it's possible that some of the children were born BEFORE they were married, but I don't think so.
Have a death date for the 1st boy, Charles, 9 June 1935, and have seen somewhere that he was 18, which would make his birth year abt 1917, which could be right.
The 2nd boy, Eric. I have seen a newpaper article about a drowning in early Jan 1927 at Magnetic Island, Queensland, of an ALSTON boy aged 7. Assuming he turned 7 sometime in 1926, would make his birth year about abt 1919, which also could be right.
The girl, Beryl, I've seen as 1923, which could also be right, as I've seen shipping notices for the family going back to England in 1936, with the daughter, Beryl, aged 13.
All of this is heresay, and is not confirmed. Would love some REAL dates and places.
Thanks Cheers Robyn
