Please could anyone confirm that the name that appears on an electoral role has to be the name that appears on a birth record and not a nick name or name you might go by.
The reason being I have found a relative from 1946 - 1962 on the electoral role but can find no death record for her.
Thanks Diane

Well, in 2013, my 'real' name, never appears!

Do you want to post the details?

You put down on the electoral roll the name you are known by. ie you may heve been registered as Joyce but are known as Mary . people can call themselves any name as long as its not to defraud.

MarieCeleste Report 10 Jan 2013 23:02

Diane, I don't think anyone could guarantee that. Anyone can call themselves anything they like as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes. If a woman lived with a man and was known by his surname then I wouldn't be surprised to find her as such on the ER. (But I bet someone will correct me if they know different!)

Would remarriage perhaps be an explanation? Or emigration?

Do you want to give us details?

The name on the electoral register is the name you go by as far as I know - and this would probably have been more flexible in the past than now too. Not a nickname obviously! Remember married women do not have to take their husband's name on marriage but would invariably have appeared on the register with his surname at this time.
My great-grandfather used his 2nd name and was recorded as this on electoral registers.
Your posting doesn't entirely make sense to me - do you wish to put a bit more about this so people can make suggestions?

Thanks to all those that answered. My lady has named herself Minnie T Champion. She was a friend and companion to my fathers aunt. She appears to have lived with the family from 1946 in Tottenham 109 Welbourne Road through till 1963. The family only ever referred to her as Nin. I have found a Minni T Champion who died in 1974 in Harringey. This is not her because I attended a wedding in 1975 and she is in the photograph. There is no one in the family I can ask about her now and I was just curious to discover if I could find any thing about her. If as some of you say you dont have to use your birth name then I guess she will remain a mystery.
Thanks again
Diane

Only problem with above - here is Arthur's death. So I am not sure why she would have been a companion, unless they parted obviously:

The Minni Trevithie Champion you found is the one I found and I really thought it must be her until I checked her death record she died in 1974. In 1975 I was a bridesmaid at my cousins wedding and my Minnie, Nin or what ever her name was is standing there in a photo as clear as day. The coincidence of a name in the same area is amazing. No I'm sure she was not married at any time, so I was told, my Aunt Kitty Fleming who she lived with for all those years was a spinster when she died in 1982. I was told that my lady went into a home in the Tottenham area I think she may have died after Kitty in 1982 but not too sure.

Who was Charles F Fleming, who was registered to vote at the address in 1962?

Kitty was born in 1906, so one would imagine that her 'friend and companion' would be of a similar age

Diane

Diane Report 11 Jan 2013 11:02

Charles F Fleming was Kitty Fleming's brother. He was my Fathers uncle. He never married either. The Flemings were Grandmothers family. In 1946 Charles F, Harriet Fleming my Dads Gran, Kitty and Bill and Minnie were all living at 109 Welbourne Road Tolttenham. They would have been of similar age. It appears that maybe Minni went to live with them after the war as she does not appear in the 30's when the Flemings were living there.

If she never married then there should be a birth record but cant see one .

Have you tried looking for a death in the Haringey reg district for the surname Champion with an approx age you think she may have been.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 11 Jan 2013 13:27

There are precious few deaths in Haringey for Champions - of any age!
I know it's just a freaky co-incidence because of what you say, but before we dismiss the Minnie above can I just ask 2 questions? Please don't be offended but just to be 100% sure.
Firstly, mad as it sounds, are you definite about the year that marriage took place? And that the person in the photo is Minnie?
Have you checked electoral register for later years? Just wondering how long she lived there.

Im not offended about the marriage question. Yes hundred percent checked the year it was 1975 and yes she is in the photo. There is her, we knew her as Nin, Kitty Fleming and her sisters Bella and my Nan Frances. Its about the last photo where they are altogether. The strange thing is and why I am so curious is that she was just Nin that lived with Aunty Kit. I have found a Minni Champion in two school admission records Dalglesh Street School in 1905 but I think she was Minnie Alice father named as Charles. She appears to have been transferred to Copperfield Road School in 1906 and there is a brother Charles. I have found a baptism record for minnie alice father charles and mother minnie alice. What do you think could this be her.

brummiejan Report 11 Jan 2013 13:59

So - you are saying you believe she was born 1900-1910 give or take? So roughly would have been in her 70's 1975? Does the photo fit that?
Also - long shot! - wondering if any other family members/friend might know a bit more -is there anyone with whom you are not in touch that might?

Do you think that Minnie might have been left something in your aunt Kitty's Will?

If so, the document might give her full name, which would help identify her.
