Dear All,

Wonder if you can help, I am having trouble finding George on 1881 census.

I know his natural Father died and his Mother lived with a man called Mason and the family all took that surname. Have searched on the 1891 census and can't pin point them. I have been told they lived near Lavender Hill in Battersea. On the 1901 census he is living Clarendon bulings Walworth with wife Caterine and children Edwin and Cornelius. I assumed I'd find him on the 1881 with his natural Father but can't pinpoint that either.

Thanks ;-)

Hi Shirley,

On the 1901 Census his birth place is Grays Inn Road, I don,t know his natural Fathers name thats why I have been trawling the 1881 Census to no avail. I thought I could find his Mothers name if I seached Mason and Mills on the 1891 census but nothing. I know he called himself Mason for awhile until his marriage to Catherine when he reverted to Mills.

Catherines Hurleys are a nightmare as well, on the 1901 census the same page as George and Catherine with their small family is another Catherine Hurley Widow living with a Son Jerimiah. My Mother in Law is convinced this is Catherine jnrs Mother, but I can.t find any previous absolute proof as Hurley and various spellings are so common, and Ellen disappeared. The family had memories of a Aunt Ellen who didn't marry but all I've found is an Ellen Hurley in an ophanage and no Catherine and Catherine together as I said a nightmare

theres a big gap in age between Edwin and George who is a newspaper shop boy

Charles Mason tho is a waterside labourer which George also did similar later on.

You usually had to have family working in the docks to get in . I came from that area and had dockers in the family so am aware what a closed shop it was.
