According to the family they were in Sutton farm , Cowbridge , but cannot find records.for them .

Don't the birth certificates tell exactly where the two boys were born? That would give you a starting place. Obviously from the 1881 census they were in the district.

It will be difficult finding any records for years in between the censuses. Perhaps the parish records might have something especially as the boys are illegitimate. You'll need to find where they are archived.

Have you found the father in any other censuses?

friendlywelshdragon

friendlywelshdragon Report 17 Jan 2013 23:51

Been looking up census's. I have the 1901 Sutton farm with Head: Edward Thomas and Wife Jane Thomas with five Children. Also 1881 census with Edward and jane in Saint Athans
Story in the family is that John Huxtable was a gardener at the farm , but he was paid to claim the children as his ,when actually they were fathered by one of the Thomas family . . Either the Head of the house,or one of the sons .The 2 year old John on the 1881 census is my Great grandfather .
Now I am more confused as it seems the Thomas family were not at Sutton farm until after 1881 John was born in 1879
I have got his infomation on another thread here as i have been trying to find his wedding
Fourth february 1879 Cowbridge Alfred John ,
Father ,John Huxtable Gardener,
Mother ,Margaret Thomas , Domestic Servant
John Huxtable father , Cowbridge
M. Thomas ,mother Aber House Port Talbot
Registered 18th March
I'm guessing Aber house could have been a place for unmarried mothers. I asked about that on the Wales thread , but no one has been able to find any information about it .

Staff at Bridgend library were extremely helpful when I contacted them about locations in their broader area.
I don't know what resources they hold there, but they would probably be able to help in some way.

The Cardiff Arms was a hotel...gave its name to the (later) stadium

The Cardiff Arms Hotel gave its name to Cardiff's famous sports stadium, the Arms Park. This mail-coach house was known earlier as Red House, when it was constructed for Sir Thomas Morgan at the time of Charles I.

I googled Saint Ardales , but it came up with Saint Aldates Oxford . Some transcritptions have errors cause of misreading the old writing on the census . looked on the census and saint ardales does seem right

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 18 Jan 2013 15:47

yes St Aldates is correct but the transcript definitely says St Ardales. But there is NOT a birth in Oxfordshire that matches :-(

I tried the census either side There are a number of John Huxstables, but not born in Oxfordshire , it is in the county of Devon I think and there are a few in Devon ,but I don't know which is correct and it's costing me to try all of them
