Hi Reggie, I didnt get the copy yet but one of my distant relatives has a copy. unfortunately communication with him takes time. I might get my own copy before he send me a copy of his!

however he did say as follows,

I've had problems researching Arthur Rose. 1911 census sows him on board a RN ship in the Med b c1885. However, his marriage certificate to your grandmother gives his birth c1888! The handwriting is not easy but his father's name looks to be Arthur Vollands Rose, farmer but I cannot find him in a census.

Hi Patchem, Not sure if he was born in exeter but his death I think you have it.
He died in Flaxby (district Claro) and about 1975 is correct as it fits with my memory.
I will ask my mother next chance.

I have ordered his marriage vert so lets see what it turns up.

I think he may have been invented, which would fit your theory that Arthur was illegitimate.

Hi Reggie, could be an invented name of course as you say. However the Vollans family were always and still are considered as "family" so there is a link somewhere.
I should have done this 20 yrs ago when my mothers older sisters were still living!

It also fits somehow to my mothers memory that her father Arthur Rose would set off early morning on his bicycle and return late evening from their house in Flaxby to visit "family"
There is no other family I am aware of (excluding Vollans) who lived anywhere near the range for bicycle. The Vollans to my knowledge had a lot in this range.

The Rose Thirsk, looks positive and I will have to ask my relatives in the area if they can also help.

I think that's worth investigating further................

1891 census may prove useful....... perhaps someone will provide the info

The 1911 census for them (page one) says there were 11 children born in the marriage, of whom 1 had died, but that does not, of course, allow for any children born before the marriage

There are 2 Arthur Rose's, the one born at Thirsk moves to Northallerton.
They need careful sorting out.

I still want to know why he claims born in Exeter if that 1911 census is correct. Age out because he lied to get into Navy?

Witnessed by George Ryles ( i think his new Father in Law)

At time of marriage he was leading seaman RN (on active service)
