Looking for a distant relative found him but birth certificate gives a diferent name i have gone down all routes with the name on certificate but no luck any help would be greatfull Thanks

Can you give us some details to work from, please?
Eg - names, year, place.
You say you have "found him" - where? censuses? which years?

This probably sounds like a stupid question; but if the birth certificate gives the wrong name, what makes you think it is the right birth certificate? :-S

As there were no penalties until 1875 for not registering births, the odds are that his simply wasn't registered.

I'm guessing that you don't have a cert..........and refer only to the GRO index of the birth for William

How did you work back to this man?

Who did he marry?

But his birth may not have been registered there were no penalties till 1875 for non registration so many didnt bother. The Church still had a LOT of influence then so it was thought to be more important to have the child baotised

1851 census has no record of a Thomas Todd born 1844+/- 2yrs living anywhere in Wales

Who were his parents? how did you get back to him cos not finding him on any census
