I would have thought Jeannie was born at the latest 1912 - otherwise wouldn't she have been a bit young to have gone to London, got a job, & returned to have Mary? Have you considered she may have been called Jeanie Adams, and assumed the name Alexander when her mother married?

Thanks Flip, we have their address, we dont know when they moved there but once there, they remained until death. We checked the 1911 census and they were not there then so obviously moved some time between then and Jeanies birth, will pass it on, as far vitising Goole, he is most certainly within driving distance, might suggest that to him.

Rootgatherer, many thanks for that seach, she appears on neither of the birth registers then. One may assume that Jeanie was indeed an assumed name, although on Marys birth certificate she is down as Jeanie Adams Alexander. The more he is pondering over it the more he is beginning to believe she was called Jean but referred to as Jeanie his memory is vague.

I wonder if a trip to the Goole library would help find when William & Ann settled in Goole? They hold the Almanacks from 1908-1940 and are in name order, and some trade directories. They also hold the electoral rolls, so it could be worth a look at the address on Mary's birth certificate.

Could also be worth contacting the library to see if they have school admissions. Not sure if you or your b-i-l are still local, but if not the local family history society will do searches, but they charge £15 per hour.

I used a credit on Scotlandspeople to look at Alexander births with the middle name Adams buy there is no Jeanie or variation of it coming up.

Thank you all for the replies, the census post for 1911 looks interesting, it is thought that Mary's father may have been a doctor!

The story goes, she was a servant in London, got pregnant, came to parents in Goole to have baby, left baby with parents, went back to London, think before Mary left school was told Jeanie was her mother (until then she thought she was her sister) this was after one of her school friends commented on how old her parents were, when about 18 went to Kensington in London to see Jeanie, she was still a servant (this must have been around 1946) Mary married Lewis Smith and had 3 sons, the youngest is my brother in law whom I'm doing the research.

I cant find a marriage so am assuming they married in Scotland, Mary signed her grandfathers death certificate, we think Jeanie was born in Scotland and probably an only child as Mary never spoke of any relatives other than those mentioned, we do have a photo and on the reverse it says 'to uncle bill and aunt annie and wee mary from nephew Eddie. My brother in law remembers visiting Dunblane in Scotland as a child to see a relative, this could have been Eddie. We do not know anything more about Eddie, not even a surname.

I am very grateful to all that have responded and for the information you have so kindly given.

Hi Ellie,

There are 2 deaths for Ann/Annie in Goole, do you have any idea which is the right one?

Ann J Alexander
Birth Date: abt 1874
Date of Registration: Mar 1946
Age at Death: 72
Registration District: Goole
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume: 9c
Page: 1082

OR

Annie Alexander
Birth Date: abt 1896
Date of Registration: Jun 1954
Age at Death: 58
Registration District: Goole
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume: 2b
Page: 512

All though this second one would have been 22 years younger than William and hardly old enough to be a grandmother in 1928 - though not impossible if she had married very young.

Although, the other one would have been 54 when Mary born, so surely too old to have been thought of as her mother? How sure are you about the William/Ann(ie) grandparents you think brought up Mary?

Did Mary marry Lewis Smith in 1949 and have 3 sons between 1950 and 1959?

ADDED: Sorry Pat, I see you have already posted these 2 deaths.

Really strange that 1910 posting as if you go the long way round and look at 1910 1st qtr for letter A then it is not listed at all under Alexander

Would really like to find this little lady in 1911. Maybe not related but at least we could rule her out as a sister to Jeanie??
