that's right, the birth certificate would probably only show the mother's name - if they were not married the father would have had to be present to register in his name or as the father

there was no formal adoption in England until the end of the 1920s

the couple would just have reared her as their own

she could have been placed with them by her mother or by authorities

the birth certificate might tell more about the circumstances of the birth, for instance if it was in a workhouse

Margee is right of course, nurse child was the term for a child placed with another family

(and Ancestry which is so focused on the United States does not have a category for this British term - I searched for a Flo* born in 1909-1911 who was a Nurse!)

you're very welcome, come back if there are more questions after the birth certificate :-)

just for info, in Burgh in the Marsh, Lincolnshire in 1911 there are two Hall households

Joseph Percy Hall 25
Lucy Ann Hall 48 widowed mother
Nellie Paddison 10 cousin

Arthur Hall 23
Sarah Hall 45 widowed mother
Louisa Hall 21 sister
Frederick Tyler 24 boarder

both households were on Church Street about 2 doors away from each other it seems

the Houlden household was on Ingoldmells Road

but Florence was not necessarily born in the same place - the birth certificate would give the exact location
