Hi. I'm new the site and to researching my past.

My dad was born in 1926, adopted in 1931, and died in 2006. He went through some process with Somerset House back in the nineties and with his adoption certificate he obtained a birth certificate.

Is there any way I can verify his birth certificate? Also, can I find out when he was given up for adoption and where he might have lived between his birth and adoption?

I should add that his name on the birth certificate is Derek Bloor (Hart) but on the adoption certificate his middle name is omitted. His mother's name is Marion Ada Hart. There is no entry for father and it has been suggested (very reasonably) that Bloor may have been his father's surname.

Many thanks in advance.
Tim

Hi Tim, first, if the name Bloor doesn't appear anywhere in his mother's family (like her mother's birth surname, sometimes passed on to grandchildren), it is indeed a good assumption that it was his father's surname.

This was very common, and back through the 19th century (my great-grandmother's first child was named this way).

Not sure what you mean by verifying his birth certificate. If you don't have the one he obtained, you can get another copy.

Have you traced his mother and her family at all? What is it in particular that you would like help with?

JoonieCloonie Report 3 Nov 2015 20:56

unfortunately, in the last available census in 1911, Marion was still living in Leicester where she was born

Street address: 100 Pool Rd Leicester
Registration district: Leicester
Charles Edward Hart 28
Olga Louisa Hart 28
Marian Ada Hart 6
Dorothy Ethel Hart 5
Phyllis Olga Hart 4

Births Sep 1904
Hart Marion Ada Leicester 7a 311

so looking for boys/young men named Bloor nearby her or even in Elham would probably not prove fruitful, if what you are hoping is to identify your dad's father

Thanks for the prompt responses.

What I would like to try and find out is whether he was given to a children's' home or placed into some form of foster care for the five years prior to his adoption.

Also, to find out what subsequently happened to Marion Ada. Did she marry? When did she die?

It would help if I could find electoral registers for Seabrook Road in Hythe where dad was born but I don't seem to be able to find those.

So any suggestions with the above would be gratefully received.

Thanks
Tim

You might( assuming that the Marion on the 1911 is the right one) try looking at the 1939 register, it's mistranscribed but right person i am sure, mother Olga is now in Hampshire...it is possible that the Burrows household accounts for the 2 others there though.

I'm stunned and very grateful and I clearly have a lot to learn!!

I will look at the 1939 register for Olga and see who the other two are.

Thank you all

Tim

Appears to be a George H Burrows ( following the principle that the reg numbers run consecutively in each household)

The other person listed does not seem to be a Burrows?

There's a possibility that john E born 1912 married in the Hampshire area, there is a match for the name and that of his wife in the same district where Olga is,

and there's this which I am just checking out

There are several Bowden /Hart births in the New Forest prior to the marriage date and one after ( on freebmd.org.uk) but no other couple marrying with those names to account for births, so it may be worth looking into.

Tim, I have sent a message ( see messages top of page), it's just a possible marriage for one of the children born to Bowden /Hart, I'd suggest checking out as much as you can to try and confirm we have the right Marion ( you could buy the marriage cert of Bowden/ Marion Hart perhaps to check age and father's details) before considering whether to try and make contact or not.

JoonieCloonie

and just to confirm the Hart/Bowden marriage ... since your Marion would have been over 40 when she married, to make sure the husband in that marriage was of a similar age

Name: Sydney Smith Bowden

he was likely previously married, in 1922

I can't see a birth or death (or previous marriage) for his first wife (also no children with mother's surname as hers) so can't be sure, but the common reason for a late marriage like that is that one of the spouses was already married and they couldn't remarry until the first spouse died

Rambling Report 4 Nov 2015 12:12

As Joonie has said, there does look like a previous marriage for Sydney, I was looking last night and could not find her birth, death or remarriage either. Will take another look today.
