backtomyroots, I would suggest if you can that you take a free trial at Ancestry ( remember to cancel before the end so you don't get charged) as Ancestry has the actual images of baptisms, marriages for London (LMA records) which might help save you some money on certs. eg the image for marriage of j Foxwell to Mary ann White can be viewed.

I did join ancestry for a 14 day trial apparently but the trial doesnt let you see anything at all. Every time I click on a search result it tells me I have to sign up.

The 1841 census shows Mary ann BW c1830 living with what appears to be grandparents - James and Mary Bartholomew and parents William and Sarah Bartholomew. Im interested to know where George White come in? If the marriage is 1850 then perhaps William bartholomew dies between 41 and 50 and the mother remarries?

I think you might find the Mary bartholomew you were looking at in 1841 is a different person?

Bartholomew looks to be a middle name, this may be the marriage to George White ( unfortunately does not show occupation)

The whites were definitely lightmen as James son of james robert foxwell had the business with george pearce white in the london gazette article. So that must be the sone george of george and mary as he was 2 years older than james.

There is a death record for Mary ann bartholomew white in st olave southwark in 1877 aged 47.

I have lightermen in my family so always interesting to find others. the occupation generally runs down the family,

You might find this site re lightermen/watermen of interest

Thanks for the link. Will check it out. Are we related? :-D I can't seem to find a marriage for George and Mary. This site is annoying in that your have to pay per view before you even really know if its the right record whereas Ancestry mentions the wires name.

PS the link on that page to the parish registers is dead. Has it changed its address?
The link for the dvd is also dead.

The site does seem to have stalled somewhat, following the death of its founder.
But if you google Lightermen you will find lots of general info.

Findmypast has the apprenticeship/binding records which is where I found the info I posted here:

"The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames binding records
1692-1949

82,238 records of apprentice binding books, which include details of each apprentice's binding to his master.

The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames reassignments
1688-1908

A list of apprentices who were reassigned from one master to another ? 12,410 records, including information about both masters and apprentices.

Thomas Doggett Coat & Badge records
1715-2010

A record of all known competitors who rowed in the annual Thomas Doggett Coat & Badge race 1715-2010 ? 4,402 records.

Corporation of Trinity House
1829-1864

A register of licences granted to ex-mariners to work as watermen on the River Thames 1829-1864 ? 90 records.

These records are licensed from local specialist Rob Cottrell."

I was going to say has the owner of the site died! Thats sad that the site is now in disarray with so many dead links.

Rambling Rose. I contacted the site and they said they have rebuilt it and they aren't aware of dead links which is very odd. However on the dead links page which returns a 404 error there is a menu up the top of the page and the links all work from there.

I found a 1901 census for a Robert and Maude foxwell in st olave. Im pretty sure this is my robert foxwell(1876) son of James(1851) and matilda. In the census it has two sister there caroline and Mary. I guess we wouldnt know if they are living there or just happen to be visiting right? In the 1881 census he appears to be Robert P but then in the 1911 he is down as Robert N unless Im mistaken somehow.

Could somebody please confirm for me?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jul 2016 01:07

If they are visiting, the record will show Visitor

LOOK at the census image!!!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jul 2016 01:18

Is this the 1901 Census you're talking about???

1901 Census

Name: Robert Foxwell
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1876
Relation to Head: Head
Gender: Male
Spouse: Maud Foxwell
Birth Place: Rotherhithe, London, England
Civil Parish: Rotherhithe
Search Photos: Search for 'Rotherhithe' in the UK City, Town and Village Photos collection
Ecclesiastical parish: St Luke
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: St Olave Southwark
Sub-registration district: Rotherhithe
ED, institution, or vessel: 08

Piece: 398
Folio: 26
Page Number: 43
Household schedule number: 284

Robert Foxwell 25
Maud Foxwell 24
Robert Foxwell 4
Albert Foxwell 3
Mary Foxwell 27
Caroline Foxwell 19

Information added from image:-

Robert Foxwell 25 Lighterman (Barge)
Maud Foxwell 24 b.ca 1877, Rotherhithe
Robert Foxwell 4 b.ca 1897, Rotherhithe
Albert Foxwell 3 b.ca 1898, Rotherhithe
Mary Foxwell 27 b.ca 1874, Rotherhithe, Sister, Packer in Paper Trade
Caroline Foxwell 19 b.ca 1882, Rotherhithe, Sister, Paper Cigarette Maker

As you can see, by looking at the image, I have confirmed that it does NOT say Visitor, therefore the assumption is that they are all living together in the same house.

where do you look at the censuses??

Can you not open the actual image of the census so you can see what is actually written on there, so you can check that the transcription is correct???????

I figured out this is Robert Nicholas son of James and Matilda.

The caroline(1882) hasn't come up before. I dont get any results for her in 1891 census or any other census. I presume she is Roberts sister. I found her birth in 1882 and marriage in 1905 but not sure who she married or why she is in no further census? and so can't find death either.

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jul 2016 03:47

I found her baptism very easily on ancestry

London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Name: Caroline Eliza Foxwell
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 24 May 1882
Father's name: James Foxwell
Mother's name: Matilda Ann Foxwell
Parish or Poor Law Union: Rotherhithe St Barnabas
Borough: Southwark
Register Type: Parish Registers

from image:-
Born:- March 21 1882
Address:- St Helena Rd
Father occupation:- Lighterman

and this is her birth registration ..........

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915

Name: Caroline Eliza Foxwell
Registration Year: 1882
Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun
Registration district: St Olave Southwark

Inferred County: London
Volume: 1d

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Jul 2016 03:55

so this is Caroline's marriage registration, she married one of two men ............

Marriages Mar 1905 (>99%)
DAY Sidney Thomas St. Olave 1d 250
FOXWELL Caroline Eliza St. Olave 1d 250
Newman George James St. Olave 1d 250
YOUNG Martha St . Olave 1d 250

Caroline married either Sidney Thomas Day OR George James Newman

So to find out who she married you look on the 1911 Census for EITHER Caroline Day with husband Sidney OR Caroline Newman with husband George ............ in each case using her birth year +/- 2 and birthplace as London

You should get your answer in one try!
