Hi wonder if anyone can advise? I'm a paid member of scotlandspeople trying to research my family tree. I'm researching the Wotton family line but when I get back to my grandfather's great grandparents (about 1860) I find no birth record. I can see information on his name, occupation and wife's details from both the birth and marriage record of his son, but there is no record of him being born at all. He is recorded also in the 1881 and 1891 census as head of household, with an approximate birth date of 1860 in Straiton, Ayrshire... but no record of this on the site at all. The birth was obviously registered somewhere but the record is missing... does anyone know of another ite I can use to search? Ive tried archives and ancestry as well as this one but only census results available for Scotland.

Is this the man you mean?

David Wotton
in the 1891 Scotland Census

Name: David Wotton
Age: 31
Estimated birth year: abt 1860
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Isabella Wotton
Gender: Male
Where born: Straiton, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 644/9
Registration district: Kelvin
Civil Parish: Glasgow St George
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 104, W Graham St
Occupation: Cellarman (Spirit)
ED: 116
Household schedule number: 17
LINE: 17
Roll: CSSCT1891_280
Household Members:
Name Age
David Wotton 31
Isabella Wotton 32
Isabella Wotton 11
David Wotton 7
Alfred Wotton 6
Margaret Wotton 1

If so, 1881 says he was born in Dalkeith. (At least, I think this is the same family):

David W Wotton
in the 1881 Scotland Census
Name: David W Wotton
Age: 23
Estimated birth year: abt 1858
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Isabella Wotton
Gender: Male
Where born: Dalkeith, Edinburghshire
Registration Number: 644/6
Registration district: St Rollox
Civil Parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 272 Buchanan St
Occupation: Salesman Grocer
ED: 44
Household schedule number: 1 A
LINE: 5
Roll: cssct1881_229a
Household Members:
Name Age
David W Wotton 23
Isabella Wotton 23
Isabella Wotton 5 Mo

However, having said that, I can't see his birth anywhere either.

Just to add to this if anyone can help... the name I'm looking for is David Whitelaw Wotton, married to Isabella Cockburn in 1880.

ArgyllGran Report 22 Apr 2017 18:22

Have you looked at his own marriage cert to see his parents' details?

Ti

Ti Report 22 Apr 2017 18:26

Yes it is, absolutley correct, thanks very much for your help! I ve just been looking at this census result as you posted and saw that it differs slightly... still no birth record for him available however, even when i search under name card variations and am really stuck on how to go back any further, argggh... Thre is howver a record of his marriage to Isabella and this actually shows details of his parents as a David Wotton and Jane Whitelaw... but no records of them either?

He's Wootton at death - but that doesn't help either.

WOOTTON
DAVID WHITELAW
67
1928
644/7 407
Possilpark

Wotton or Wootton don't sound at all like Scottish names.

Looks as if Jane didn't keep him, and he was "a boarded-out" - early form of fostering.

His birth cert night give some info re Jane, but if not, it's unlikely you'll find anything about her.
She may not have belonged to Straiton, but just gone there to give birth.

Ti

Ti Report 22 Apr 2017 19:05

Thanks! What do you thin happened then> Do you think he was adopted by the family? WHo knows eh? I found the birth record for him on scotlands people regisyred as illegitimate with a Jane Whitelaw as mother, wondering where the Jane in the household went!

Says there was a william whitelaw, uncle present at registration, but unsure as to whether this is an uncle of her of of David, what do you reckon?
