Right. Well my thoughts are

(1). Not unusual for an illegitimate boy to assume he was named after his father. So his father may have been a Mr. Wotton a shoemaker but not necessarily called David.

(2). If he was still in contact with his mother and she had married since his birth, it would be reasonable for her to be listed as Jane Wotton ms Whitelaw now (new surname).

Did he say if either of his parents were deceased please?

OK I may be getting totally mixed up here. George Bassett and Mary Ann Proctor were witnesses.

Just in case - a possible alternative 1861 to the two already suggested, as YOB's on old censuses aren't necessarily correct.:

Jane Whitelaw
in the 1861 Scotland Census
Name: Jane Whitelaw
Age: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1833
Relationship: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Haddington, Haddingtonshire
Registration Number: 685/1
Registration district: St George
Civil Parish: Edinburgh St Mary
County: Midlothian

Richard B Sanderson 9
James A Sanderson 7
Jane Whitelaw 28
Margaret Carr 39
Jane Drysdale 25

However, in view of her place of marriage, the 1861 with the Kinnairds seems most likely.

If this is the correct Jane, she has taken at least a decade off her birth at times, much younger husband. Her death with a EBY of 1833 is nearer the mark.

rootsgatherer... says nothing of parents deceased.

Ti

Ti Report 28 Apr 2017 17:23

you are right about the assumption of David as the father having no basis in fact btw! I didn't even consider that..

Thanks alvie gal too!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Apr 2017 17:30

Yes, I think she was born 1829 (birth record posted earlier), and then doctored her age because of younger husband.

As far as Scotlands People's concerned, there are no other Jane Whitelaws born in Haddington around that time.
Of course, registration wasn't compulsory at that time, and parish records can be patchy.

As far as the 1861 census is concerned, there are several possibilities, but if she was in England as lady's maid to Lady Kinnaird, it makes sense she met Thomas and married in England.

Hmm.... The only think is, I'm not seeing a christening for a brother William for Jane Gordon Whitelaw although there is one on the censu.
