On second thoughts, the William on David's baptism record was probably Jane's brother, and David's uncle.

We know she did have a brother William, per 1941 census (on other thread), and (if it's the same William) he was living in Straiton (where David was born) in 1861.

As already said, parish records aren't necessarily complete.

Hi just one other thing... re the possible father David of illegitimate David, given that the name was right... I have found a record of a David Wotton innkeeper of Railway Tavern Anstruther Wester in Fife, lately dead, no age - a trust deed advert in East Fife Record 1st February 1889. Image is from the index cards from Cupar Library, Fife. Have no idea how to access any further information, any ideas?

I have googled history of the Railway Tavern and nothing, as well as looking at records for Anstruther Wester around this time, as well as looking at 1881 census results.. nothing!

Ancestry says this about the Cupar Library Newspaper Index Cards

Original data: Index cards provided by Cupar Library, Fife Council, 33 CROSSGATE, CUPAR, Fife, Scotland, KY15 5AS tel: 01334 412285 fax: 01334 659367 e-mail [email protected] http://www.fifedirect.org.uk.

Might be worth contacting them.

I don't see any David Wotton or similar in any Scottish census, nor a death around 1889.

It was at 16 High Street West, and was also known as the Dreel Tavern, apparently.

"Somewhat out from the town centre, on the coastal road to the west, stands the Dreel Tavern (taking its name from the adjacent burn). This fine building dates from the 17th century. This tavern was run successfully by Marian & Barry Scarsbrook from 1980 to 2005, turning it into one of the most atmospheric and busy pubs in the area"

Don't know if this would be any help - re East Fife Record, which is the paper where that record of David Wotton was found.
