This is a challenge, Barbara Hall married Cuthbert J Griffin Dec 1936 in Pocklington, England. On the 1911 Irish Census a Barbara Hall was a boarder aged 3 in the household of John and Rebecca Forbes, the family are sure that her name was O'Mahoney. I saved this file years ago, don't know where it came from.
Notes for BARBARA O MAHONEY:
Barbara's birth certificate was destroyed in a fire in Dublin, Ireland where it was kept. She was a child at the time
was unable to trace any details. Her children were told that her mother was Irish and her father English Her maiden
told, was O'Mahoney. When she came to England, she called herself "Hall" She took the year of Cuthbert's birth as
took the birthday and month of Phillip's birth ( taken from a note from Angela Branson, Cuthbert's daughter.

Other info from the family is that Barbara had relative Katherine Tynan Hinkson, who was a poet from Dublin born 1861, Katherine married Henry Albert Hinkson 1893 Kingston, UK.
Would love to be able to find Barbara O'Mahoney/Hall Birth and reason for the name change to Hall.
Thanks

What was her declared age on the marriage certificate please? Did she name her father on it?

Have you found her on the 1939 register?

Not seeing a birth registered for a Barbara Hall or for a Barbara "anything" February 1908 +/- 2 years

If you take the age at 1911 census (taken 2nd April) to be correct then she should have been born April 3rd 1907 to April 2nd 1908.

There are 44 birth registrations showing for Barbara's between those dates in Ireland, but no O'Mahoney's or Hall's.

All the info you have found is the right person and pretty much as much as I have managed to find. Thinking that the info I had about Barbara not knowing her parents and choosing to use her husbands year of birth is correct. But she was using the Hall surname in 1911 when she was 3 and living with the Forbes household. What was her connection to the Forbes? and where did the name O'Mahoney come from? Can't find a connection to Katerine Tynan Hickson either, the only other name mentioed as a possible aunt is Murial Stewart. Will keep looking. Thanks all

I think this is John and Rebecca in 1901 (original could well be Rebecca) and they are in Artigarvan, her residence at time of marriage. Son Robert named for her Father ?

From the 1911 census, I would guess that Sarah Love (whose birth I can't find either) and Barbara Hall were orphans "boarded out" with the family.

Not necessarily any blood connection.

If her birth record was indeed destroyed in the fire (although from various Google results it looks as if civil birth records weren't involved) , then there will be no record to find.

Mary Report 4 Apr 2019 10:36

Did she have 4 daughters

one born A/M/J 1943 in Surrey
V2a P892 mum nee Hall

Another with the same name J/F/M 1943 Watford Hertfordshire V3a P2087 mum nee O'Mahoney. this could be the couple Michael Griffin married April 1942 in Watford to Anastasia O'Mahoney

I haven't put first name as they maybe still alive, but they have same name and year of birth but born different place and different mums maiden name.
3 other girls have mums maiden name Hall.

The John Omahoney and Nora Tynan he died 1904.

1911 records her name as Hall - she wasn't old enough to give the info herself, so that must have been the name the Forbes family were given for her

Where does the suggestion come from that her name was ever anything other than Hall?

Is there any solid reason for this line of thought?

Rootgatherer asked you if Barbara had named a father on her marriage cert.

What is the answer, Please?

Someone named Lauren has Barbara on her GR tree. Is that someone you know about?

Nicola

Nicola Report 6 Apr 2019 00:13

I have no hard evidence that her name was O'Mahoney but the family always knew that was her name before Hall. Anastasia O'Mahoney married Michael Griffin in Watford 1942 (Barbara & Cuthbert's daughter was born in Watford 1943) must be a connection but the family know nothing about these names. Will message Lauren as she has both Cuthbert and Barbara on her tree.
