Is Gerald 100% proven to be your relative?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 5 Feb 2023 11:36

Deborah

Could you just give us Gerald's year of birth - not the full date of birth?

Devon and Wales are only 'not far' since the Severn Bridge was built ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

So the Jones name could be a red herring. How distant is the cousin match? Have you both done trees far back enough?

Deborah

Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 11:41

Kathleen 1945

Shirley, yes I can ask

Only proof is the DNA

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Feb 2023 11:43

Who told you that Gerald's father was called Edward?

He and Margaret seem still to be in Abergavenny.................look at the ER

Deborah

Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 11:43

I dont know if it is Gerald or Margaret who is my relative, this is what I am also trying to establish.

Deborah

Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 11:44

ErikaH, all the info given to me was from Great Grandaughter of Edward and Florence

Again, how distant is the match? That will give you the clue as to how far back you have to look.
Then you can compare your tree to that matches tree.

You also need to follow the other persons tree back yourself, in case there are mistakes.

Have you tried working back from her?

Has she researched her own line thoroughly, and obtained documentary proof?

Deborah

Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 11:50

Personally, I don't think a DNA result is the best way to start looking for relatives. It is useful further down the line but much better to start with yourself, then your parents and their siblings and carry on backwards looking at births and marriages until you get to the 1939 register and then census records.

You could get tied up in all sorts of knots otherwise.

People's memories can't always be relied on.

Those are very low matches. I think you can be assured they are related because of the other matches but at that level the actual match can be hard or impossible to find.

Experts will often regard that level of match very unreliable.

The Richards/Jones line to which Deborah refers.............or part of it.......

Thank you ErikaH, she has just given me her Great Grandmothers name, maternal line, Agnes Harris as you posted above.

With those cams I think you may have to track back to around 4c great grandparents at least. Then you would have to look at ALLtheir descendants in the hope of finding a matching person. With no guarantee that you will.

You are both right about the DNA, I dont usually go that route, but I was asked to look and so I thought I would do it for her.
