Hi Tracey. Very grateful for a look-up for George William or William George CRAWLEY, born 1876/77, in St Georges in the East, Middlesex. I have tried to locate him in all the normal places, that I have access to anyway. He has disappeared from the 1891 census. He joined the RA, in Woolwich in 1896. His mother was Annie CRAWLEY and I believe his father was George CRAWLEY. Any help appreciated.. Rose C (ta)

Hi Tracey. Re: CRAWLEY. It is believed he changed his name from MORTIMER to CRAWLEY sometime between 1880 and 1896 (we believe his father died and his mother co-habbited with a George CRAWLEY). The George I am looking for presumably took the name of the George CRAWLEY his mother was living with. Why oh why is life so complicated. I found a George MORTIMER in 1881 living in Chapman Place, St Georges in the East. Its just that when he joined the Army in 1896, he gave his name as George CRAWLEY. ha! I have been trying to unravel this problem for donkeys yonks. ha. Thanks Tracey. Rose C

David Report 22 Aug 2005 14:13

Hi Tracey. Re: CRAWLEY/MORTIMER. When he joined the Army in 1896, he gave his name as George CRAWLEY, born in St Georges in the East. He gave his age as 19 yrs and 3 mths. He gives his next of kin as mother, Annie CRAWLEY. He also says that he has an elder sister, Eliza. He says that his mother was living at 19 Upper Fenton Street, St Georges in the East. He married in 1899, Portsmouth giving his name again as George CRAWLEY. Eliza, his sister was born MORTIMER!! On his marriage cert he says that his father was George CRAWLEY, (deceased) Dock Labourer. WHAT A MESS. Rose C. xx

Hi Tracy Could I take advantage of a look up on British Origins ( a resource I have never used ) I note that there are 2 entries for the surname PULHAM under the: London Apprenticeship Abstracts (1442-1850) I wonder if these could be a Samuel PULHAM and his brother James PULHAM for carpentry? If not I'd still like to know what information this look up brings. Many thanks for your time, trouble and very kind offer Much happiness Debi ps could I also ask about the one entry for the name under the WILLs? who what where when .......... Also....... lol......... is British Origin worth it's fee? or is it really hit and miss? Thanks Tracy.
