Police-orders is a website database of Metropolitan police officers, but it is not complete. THIS THREAD NOW CLOSED. PLEASE CHECK FOR REPLIES TO YOUR QUERIES.

If you have an ancestor who served in the Met I can check his surname in the database. This might give his first name, warrant number and date he joined, resigned/retired from the force as well as details about which area he served in. You can use the warrant number to find his service records at Kew. These include the original examination of the officer when he joined the Met and give a physical description as well as other personal details. Kew also has pension records which give next of kin, children, address and salary information. If your policeman ancestor was not in the Met, his records may be with the county records office or with the police force concerned. nell

Julie Police-orders is a site for Metropolitan [ie London] officers only. If your ancestor was in Liverpool he won't be on there. You will need to contact the Liverpool police force and/or the county records office. nell

Kim The City of London Police: Registers listing every member of the force since warrant numbers were introduced on 9 April 1832 together with personal files on 95% of officers who have served since that date have been transferred from the City of London Police Records Office to the Corporation of London Record Office, PO Box 270, Guildhall, London, EC2P 2EJ (Tel: 020 7332 1251) website: www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/leisure_heritage/libraries_archives_ museums_galleries/clro/index.htm You can e-mail them for info on CLRO[at]corpoflondon.gov.uk The City Archives manager was Juliet Bankes [2003] and was very helpful. She gave me some info about my great-uncle and offered to send me photocopies of his Declaration and Record of Service. You, or your representative can visit the records office to see the file in person. nell

Hi Nell, Not sure id this is the same thing you were offering last week. However here goes. Please can you check for Charles Cuff who was in Bethnal Green Police Station in 1871. He was born Batcombe Somerset. Thanks Fi

Unknown Report 13 Mar 2005 10:58

Fi (and Angel!) It is the same thing. So no luck, I'm afraid. There's a Sgt Cuff in Wilkie Collins' novel 'The Moonstone', one of the earliest fictional detectives. That is of no use to your genealogical research, but its a bit of trivia you might like to know! nell
