Nell, Thanks anyway for looking for John Noble. It occurred to me that James Leader Bishop had done exactly 25 years when he retired - that may give me a new lead as I might find a newspaper account, so thanks again! Chris

Helen in Berkshire Report 8 Mar 2005 00:32

Hi Nell Looks like you've been busy at Kew! I don't suppose the records you've got include Special Constables, do they? My father's half-brother Charles Hitchcock (or Charles Key - not sure if he changed his name after his mother's re-marriage) was a Special Constable. My father last had contact with him in 1939 before the war, and then lost touch. I should be astounded (though delighted) if you had any info., but I thought it was worth a try! Regards Helen

Tony Nothing on Charles Rodaway, sorry. Can you confirm that's the right spelling of his surname? nell

Unknown Report 8 Mar 2005 16:48

Helen I found this on the National Archives pages about the Met: 'The Metropolitan Police force is augmented by the Special Constabulary: private citizens who undertake police duties. Details of the careers of special constables are published in Police Orders (MEPO 7 ). An 1875 nominal roll of officers sworn in to supplement the work of the regular force is held under reference MEPO 2/143 . It gives date of appointment, place of work as a constable and name of sponsor.' So I think you will need to get to Kew to check him out! nell

Hi Nell Thanks very much for that. I didn't think there would be anything online.... I'll have to brave Kew sometime; I'm one of the people putting a trip off as it sounds a bit scary! Regards Helen

Unknown Report 8 Mar 2005 17:09

Helen It's not scary, but it can be a bit bewildering as it is so vast. Keep your eye on the boards, I believe there are plans afoot for a June trip. nell

Hello Nel. My GG Grandfather was a policeman in 'T' division, Hammersmith around 1870 to late 1890's. Anything more would be of great help to me. I tried to get onto the Police Orders site a couple of years ago but messed up the registration form on-line. Unfortunately you only get one bash at it! Someone got the details above for me but I would like to getv the information that Kew holds. many thanks inanticipation, Roger GC

Nell - I looked the last time I was at Kew for someone and just couldn't find a number for him. CHARLES GOSLING. He was a constable in 1891 aged 31 and Met police sgt 1901 aged 41 in Islington. He was born in Slimbridge Glos. Could you see if you can find something for my next trip to Kew. Jan

Hi Helen Only last week I discovered a distant relative of mine was a policeman based at Bow Street Station. His name was Frederick Knights, he was a constable and was there at the time of the 1891 census although I can't find him on the 1901 one.
