Dear Kaye (In Sydney) From my g-g-grandads record it is not clear which regt he was attached to-but he came from Ireland to India in 1854. I also have been told that he surved in Bhurtpore, which is the oldest most honoured battery in India today ( My hubby is in the same battery). British library address = British library. Oriental and India Office collections. 96 Euston Road London NW1 2DB. Tel 020 7412 7873 Fax 020 7412 7641 ( PROBABLY CHEAPER TO FAX A LETTER) I would be unable to get a copy of the record myself as they like to see proof of family connection. I suggest that you write to them and say that you live in Sydney, so are unable to search the records yourself. They do not charge much for their searches. It would be money well worth spending as you may find hidden clues as to other members of the family, postings, addresses etc. Good luck Gem

Hi Gemma, Many thanks for the offer. Could you look for any Hofmann's. My grandfather was John Clemmens Hofmann (wife Annie) who was in the British army with several children born abroad. I know of at least one child (one of twins) born in India in 1914. Second twin did not survive so would like to have any details. There may well be others born in India any time between 1900 and 1920 ish who may have subsequently died - possibly twin girls. Rose
