Thanks JJ,

It's nice to get some kind words. On top of the queries below I've had about 30 mails directly from my site over the last few days, which has been challenging. I'm thinking of calling myself an Irish expert the number of those queries I get :-)

Cheers

Hi Phil,

I am trying to find a family in Ireland, Belfast area maybe Antrum or Down. Nicholas John Carney (hairdresser) and his wife Margaret Kennedy , they had two girls Catherine and Mary about 1880, they may be twins..

Any info on any of them would be greatly appreciated.!!

Hi Betty,

Just done a quick search on my documents, and there's about 75 documents that came up for Carney, most of them were for Mayo though. I suspect Kennedy will probably be as popular.

I'll do a bit more digging and let you know if I find anything.

Cheers

Hi Phil just in from work, thanks for your time and yes hes hard to trace. Sorry for the mix up but its the 1871 not 1891 census I found him sorry.
I backtracked from what I knew via family starting with my grandmother Rosanna Higgins 1899 she was born in St Asaph Wales. She had twin sisters (younger) but were taken into a convent and we think were adopted. Havent started to trace them yet!!

1901 census-I have her living in the Union workhouse at St Asaph with her mother Elizabeth Higgins 1880 (single mother).
1891 census- Elizabeth Higgins Head (widow) 1843
Elizabeth Higgins Daughter 1880
Kate Higgins Daughter 1882
Living 2 Boston Place St Asaph Denbighshire Conway Caenarvonshire. This must be right as family said there was an aunt Kate.
1871 census-John Higgins Head 1846
Elizabeth Higgins Wife 1843
Barbara Higgins Daughter 1868
John J Higgins son 1871
Rosannah Callaghan Wifes Sister1849
Living 52a Wellington Road St Asaph Denbighshire Bagallt Flintshire. Not 100% certain if have right family but seems to tie in.
This is as far as I have got . Drew a blank in Mayo so he might be in uk somewhere before that??

Thanks again and sorry for the mix up again.
Luv Sue

Lisa,

I have over 650 documents in all relating to Ireland. Most of the documents I have are in Word format, so searching for a single surname is fairly easy. Combing two names is a bit more difficult as a lot of the documents are in table format and MS search doesn't like, or recognize, that.

The names I have listed are from my tree, that's where my effort tends to go when putting stuff on the site. Although I list all my unwanted certs along with my real ones, plus any people send me.

I'll have a look-see for your names although it would help if there was a county.

Cheers

Lisa,

A quick search shows:
19 document for Hoy - lots of Longford
59 documents for Dawson - mainly Mayo, but some Longford
9 documents for Wier - again some Longford, would have thought there would be more than that.

If you can give me some further info to narrow the search I'll have another look. If you don't want to use here then you can mail me off my site, or use the message board.

Susie,

I've found what may be him in the 1861 census for Denbigshire. They're living at 5 Domings Square, St. Asaph.

Listed are:
Michael - 65 father - Ag Labourer - born Ireland
James - 31 Head - Railway labourer - born Ireland
Mary - 35 wife - born Ireland
John - 16 brother - born Ireland
Martin - 6 - born St. Asaph
Thomas - 3 - born St. Asaph
James - 2 - born St. Asaph
Patrick - 7 months - born St. Asaph

Not sure who he's the brother to, could be John I suppose.

Cheers

Susie,

There's an interesting one in the 1851 census for Lancashire. My thoughts were that the majority of immigrants from Ireland turned up there (Liverpool) before traveling off around the country.

He's aged 4 living with his parents John & Catherine, along with 3 other children. They're all listed as being born in Mayo which is what caught my eye. There are another 4 candidates in that census all born in Ireland.

Happy hunting

Phil
If you have time I have a really difficult one and have got stuck.
My great grandfather was William Houghton born 1850c in Whiston Lancashire. He married Elizabeth Waine (also born around 1850 )in 1871 in the parish Church at Whiston. Elizabeth was born in Prescott.
I ordered the marriage certificate to find William's Dad and it came back blank!!
I have had some help and am wondering if Peter was his Dad but have no proof.
On the 1891 census I find the family but not on 1881 census.I find Eliz with her parents in 1871 but can't find William.
Am wondering if I would be able to go by an address on the census and see who was living in the same house in 1881 as in 1891.

Hope you get all this.

Don't worry if it is too much work.it is a big mystery.

Efes123 Report 23 Nov 2007 18:43

Elizabeth,

Peter is a good guess. In the 1861 census (Class: RG9; Piece: 2744; Folio: 45; Page: 44; GSU roll: 543022.) there's certainly one that could be the family. If this is right, Peter is an engine fitter at coal face. There's a William that matches in the 1871 census (Class: RG10; Piece: 3860; Folio: 48; Page: 47; GSU roll: 841934.) who is a collier, but is married to an Ann (born abt. 1842) a few years older than him.

I'd suggest looking for his birth certificate, as that will tell you one way or another. It wasn't uncommon for children to be born out of wedlock and not have a father's name on their documentation.

Both of these census put him being born in 1849, there's only one William Houghton born in that year in Prescot (Registration area for Whiston) Q3 1849 Vol. 20 Page 847.

Let me know if you want me to do any further digging or you're going to buy a certificate.

Cheers

Elizabeth Report 23 Nov 2007 20:45

Hi Phil
Many thanks for looking at that for me.

One thing I am 100per cent certain of is that he married Elizabeth Waine in 1871.
if I order a birth certificate how do I know I am ordering the correct one? There are a couple of William's that match that age and area.
He has certainly left me with a task!!

I am rather new to some of this.
When looking up census' is it possible to look up an address rather than a familly name to see who was living at an address 10 years before?
As I said I have found the family in the 1891 census but can't find them in 1881?
i will leave that thought with you over night.

I think I may be in for a trip to Liverpool at some stage!!

Many thanks
Elizabeth
