Hi Ginny,

One branch comes to halt in 1845 (born Dublin, father's name on marriage certificate, but no trace of any other family); the rest are around 1780s ish.

I'm unhappy about parish register links (although there is a possible trail on one branch back to the 1590s) since I picked the wrong John to follow in the 1780s (sorted out when I checked against wills). 90% are ALs, with no wills found....I'm unconvinced by elderly parents' claims to the child on the census when there is a teenage daughter at home ... also, travelling to ROs is out the question for me these days ... I find the lack of info associated with names on a tree before 1780s means it just seems like lists - much more interesting to trace siblings sideways with the census - anyway, these are my excuses for not tracing further back!

Sorry Ivy.. I have looked back at some really old census for Uraih Jagger and can't even read them.. what do you do in this instance?

Ivy Report 17 May 2008 12:10

I start with the letters I can read - for instance, head, son, wife, mar, unm, single, parish where they are living - lots will be born there - and have a look to see how consistent each letter is - and then try to read everything else that the enumerator has written before attempting to read what he has put about my family - sometimes it becomes clear, sometimes not. Also, see how Ancestry and FindMyPast have each transcribed the info. Cross-check siblings names against the BMD info - the registrar's clerks tended to be tidier and more careful with names and with their writing.
