Sheila Report 18 Oct 2008 11:10

Hi Mike

I limp onwards with my Bodycote line, two steps forward, one step back.

Robert Bodycot married Ann Cooke in the September Quarter of 1850 in Leicester and if he was as adventuroous as most of his forebears I would guess St Margarets or St Leonards.

I think he is the brother of Henry and Charles (my 3 x gt grandfather) and therefore son of Joseph and Elizabeth, but with the parallel families around there is always a chance that he wasn't! Is there any chance you could just check the father's name on the marriage entry for me?

If he is one of Joseph's boys why does he say he was born in St Lucia when Joseph's army record suggests that he never moved out of India?

There are more questions than answers as someone once said.

Sheila

PS Good win for Tigers last Sunday and such a lovely sunny day to be at Welford Road.

Hi Mike

Were all the Lords well to do in Countesthorpe one of mine married a Ringrose?
Sue
Mike I went over last week to Countesthorpe I was very lucky some one let me in the church as I was looking round it I saw on the wall three plaques one was Steven North his wife Mary and one was his son's. It was telling you when they died they were quite big, I did ask around but no one knew anything about them I emailed the vicar and he didn't know. How would I find out, my husband said that maybe they were very generous to the church, would that of been the case.

Greeting’s again. ……… Dewdrop.

Having studied the Census returns 1861 ~ 81.

I’m inclined to go with your thinking. ……..
That Abraham was the son of Samuel & Elizabeth Boat.

Birth details :~ Jul.Aug.Sept Qrt. 1864.
Abraham Boat.
Blaby District
Cert No’ 7 a. 33.
Countesthorpe came under Blaby District.

Elizabeth dies followed by the tragic death of Samuel
Looks like Sarah Daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth
Then takes on the roll of looking after Abraham.
Sarah goes on to marry into the Matthews Family
Taking Abraham with her. who takes on the surname of Matthew’s.

Otherwise it would mean that William Matthew, Sarah’s husband was 14 when Abraham was born going on the ages given on the 1881 Census.

This is backed up by the Burials for Boat of Countesthorpe
Seems a sad time for the family 1860 / 70’s

Boat Sarah 30 Apr 1816 2mths Daughter Of James & Joanna

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the kind offer.

I have a Sophia Hemsley who I am pretty sure was illegitimate and whose birth took place in Kegworth around 1818. Her mother Sarah Hemsley, later married (in 1826) a William Knowles, again Kegworth.

I would be very grateful if you could find anything on either Sophia or her mother Sarah. Going by the information Sarah gives on the censuses I reckon she was born about 1807, in Kegworth.

Many Thanks.

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 19 Oct 2008 17:20

Greeting’s & Welcome. …… Julie

Ummmm. ......... ?

Are you sure of your dates. ..... going on the years you have given
Sarah would be only 11 years old when she gave birth to Sophia.
Unless I’m reading it wrong ?

Having looked at the 1841 & 51 Census returns where Sophia is within the Household of William & Sarah Knowles......

Although Sophia is down as a Daughter.
I would think it’s more likely she was a sister to Sarah.

Just using the resources I have to hand. ………..

Baptism :~

Sarah daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Hemsley.
13th. February 1806.
Kegworth & Diseworth Baptist Church.

Elizabeth dies and Peter ( Widow) marries a Hannah Potter 1820 Kegworth.

Marriage. :~

William Knowles. ~ Sarah Hemsley.
21st. February. 1826.
St: Andrew’s Parish Church.
Kegworth.
By Banns.

I Await further instructions……….
before I check out original registers at the records office.

Jubal Report 19 Oct 2008 17:51

Hi Mike,

I've been so wrapped up in finding Sophia I've overlooked the bloomin' obvious with Sarah's DOB.

Of course you are right, she couldn't have been only 11.

I have the marriage certificate of Sophia to William Colledge and she gives her father's name as 'William Hemsley' (deceased), a Blacksmith. The marriage took place in Derby in 1856, and the age she is down as is 38 and she was a spinster.

I've got very confused with her because on the birth certificates of her children she gives (on one of them) her former name as Hemsley and on the other Knowles.

Also I know people often didn't really know their exact YOB but on the censuses her age is very inconsistent:-

1841. Age 18
1851. Age 24.
1861. Age 40.
1871. Can't find her or family.
1881. Can't find her or family.
1891. Age 66, a widow and gives her name as Ann!

Perhaps if you could just try and find her baptism it might at least point me in the right direction.

I would appreciate ANY help or advice you can give me, I've been looking for this family on and off for a while now and it's driving me mad!

Best Wishes,

Julie
