Hi everyone, I am having huge problems trying to go back further on my Great Grandad's side - I have his marriage certificate so you would think it would be easy, but NO it isn't.

His name is Henry Charles Bridger - married Sarah Maria Quested on 15th June 1874 and died before his son James Henry Bridger was born on the 7th July 1875 - the marriage certificate confirms he was a Seaman, and that his dad was named John Bridger and he was a Coachman - but can't seem to find them on any census, or anything else.

Can anyone help me please

Many Thanks
x

Have you got a rough idea of the year he was born?

On the marriage index his name is Henry Charles BridgeS not Bridger.

Hi

I think a rough estimate when he was born was perhaps the same sort of time his wife was, she was born in 1842.

The marriage certificate does actually look like Bridges but think this is an error as should definately be BRIDGER - have even looked at the census for mis spellings as Bridges, etc but no luck

Thanks x

No age on marriage cert then?

If he was in the Royal Navy you might find his records on the National Archives site. They cost about £3.50 to download.

Middy Report 2 Oct 2009 16:47

It does get confusing as his widow married someone called James Ing and James Henry the son is on the census as Henry Ing in 1881, I have just had a look on the archives regarding the navy but again cannot find anything - I just don't know what else to do??

Assuming marriage witnesses offer no clue?

The Witnesses are the Brides dad James Quested and an Emma Louisa Bridger (don't know who she is)

Sorry to be a pain xx

Hi Marion - this is the marriage for Henry Bridger and Sarah Quested - I have the marriage cert and definitely right.

Hi Janet, oooh it could be - but I can't tie them in as I don't really know whether Henry had any siblings?? as can't find anything about him - only have the info on the marriage cert and on his son's birth certificate which confirmed that he had died before he was born. Any ideas how I can confirm about the other marriage you found

Really appreciate everyone's help

Well, a bit of a long shot and can't find them on ancestry. However she must be a family member. A sister would be nice! Or even his mother!
God, i thought my family were bad!

Have just checked Ancestry for the Alexander marriage but dad isn't the same as Henry's

Let's go back to basics! Is there any chance this is him?

Bridger Henry Charles Portsea 7 134

The only other Henry C with phonetic search on surname:

Births Dec 1843
Bridge Henry Charles Hackney 3 114

Hi Jan

I know this is so frustrating, to be honest I have NO idea where he was born, they did get married in Lambeth and the family then appeared to stay there for quite some years - I presumed that he wld have come from this area but as I say I don't know - not much help I know.

I only know his dad's name because of the marriage certificate - I wll have a look on Ancestry for the birth you have just given

Sorry

Just checked where Portsea was/is and it is Portsmouth - wondering whether to get the certificate to see whether it is him as if he was a seaman, perhaps it could be the right one maybe
