Thanks Christine 2
I will check that out but the time of the year doesn't really fit. You have raised an interesting point. There was 'talk' of a surname change from 'Kinder' sometime but that was dismissed as incredible. It would explain no B cert!
Yes sibblings (at least Elsie May) stayed in England, married an Edward Stevens, had kids; Elsie, Vivian and Vera. Young elsie then apparently married a Saxton and lived Mapperly Nottingham

Just something to mull over - may be something or nothing but I have to go and haven't got time to think about it at the mo.

In April-June 1913 a Maud Corbishley (note with an o not u) married Arnold Kinder in Ashton under Lyne Cheshire ref 8d 845.

In July-Sept 1915 they had a daughter Margaret and in April-June quarter of 1917 (ignore the quarter as they may not have registered him in time for Jan-March quarter) they seem to have had a son called Walter Kinder.

I haven;t got time to see if I can find marriages etc for these children, and there is probably no connection at all, but I found them when I was looking for Kinder births in 1917 and I just thought that with the Corbishley/Curbishley connection it was too interesting not to note.

I just popped back and that Walter Kinder isn't your Alfred. I found Walters death in England. That Kinder/Corbishley/Curbishley connection is still shouting at me though :)

p.s. There is a Vickers Street in Mapperlay Park Nottingham. Maybe it was near there. You could ask if anyone could do you a look up at the main Nottingham library, if you know what year they lived there.

The young Elsie may very easily still be alive Mary - she was born in 1934. That second marriage isn't a second marriage, it's the first Elsie's daughter.

Cyril and Ethel appear to have had a son and he has himself and young Ethel on GR. You could PM him Bryn and see if he has any certificates that might give you a clue to your grandfather. I will PM you the birth details of the son Bryn , so that you can find him on here if you wish.

Oh - and Vivian and Vera appear to have been twins Bryn.

Opps! Christine you are quite right....I misread what Bryn had said, I didn't see that he'd said *young* Elsie......and have removed the info accordingly.

Thanks

LOL Mary - don't worry about it. It's easily done, especially when these families insist on giving their children the same first and second names as themselves :))

Bryn

Do you know when Elsie M Stevens died? The death indexes give year of birth and later ones give date of birth. This would help pinpoint her birth at least.

I hesitated to put this one up Mary as, although it's the most likely looking one, the date of birth doesn't quite fit the only Notts births. Mind you, we all know that the birth date is only as accurate as the person who registers the death. So, a possible for reference -

Elsie May Stevens 1907 Feb 1993 Nottingham Nottinghamshire - birth given as 13th Sept 1907.

Only close births on free BMD are -

Births Sep 1906 - Jones Elsie May Mansfield 7b 125

Births Dec 1909 - JONES Elsie May Nottingham 7b 449

Hi Christine

There is also this one........but although there are very many Elsie M Jones births in Q4 1914 none of them are in Nottingham. Of course we don't actually really know where they were born though :-((((

Working on the premise of them both being of a similar age, I looked at deaths for Edward Stevens in Nottingham and found 2 likely ones, 1972 and 1973. One born in 1903 and the other born 1911............ so that doesn't help much either LOL.

Name: Elsie May Stevens
Birth Date: 7 Oct 1914
Death Registration Month/Year: Feb 1999
Age at death (estimated): 84
Registration district: Nottingham
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
Register number: F66A
District and Subdistrict: 6891F
Entry number: 221

I have new information and welcome any advice please... I now have a birth record for a sibling - Elsie May Jones born 17 Oct 1914: It shows mother as Ellen Louisa Daniels of 137 Nellingborough Road Northampton U.D. and father as Alfred Jones, occupation "conjuring acrobat" of Castle Street Northampton U.D.

I have been unsiccessful in locating the marriage record of these two. There are 2 Ellen Louisa Daniels; 1878 Pershore and 1882 Islington. I don't know where to go from here! How can I work out which is the correct Ellen Daniels? And, how can I work out amongst the numerous which Alfred Jones is the right one? Over 1 month looking now and still not much closer. I welcome some help please

Bryn Report 30 Apr 2010 05:08

Sorry that was 7 Oct 1914 for Elsie (not 17)

Thanks JP, I have Alfred William Jones' Australian death record but it doesn't shed any further light. I also sent a PM to Debbie when she first offered but no reply. Thanks anyway

Bryn I hope you don't mind me butting in but I'm pretty sure the address you have given for Ellen Louisa Daniels should be Wellingborough Road

I looked on 1911 and there are only 3 Ellen Louisa Daniels and one of those is only 10

these are what come up

INSTITUTION DANIELS ELLEN LOUISA F 1876 35 Farnham Surrey
HOUSEHOLD DANIELS ELLEN LOUISA F 1894 17 Mutford Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD DANIELS ELLEN LOUISE F 1901 10 Paddington London
HOUSEHOLD DANIELS LOUISA ELLEN F 1890 21 Guildford Surrey

Don't all laugh at once as I'm on one of my flights of fancy again...... but.......he was a conjuring acrobat so probably moved around a lot and if it was a shotgun marriage in the same quarter as Elsie was born and they wanted to keep it a secret ?????????

I can't find a marriage for an Ellen L Daniels to Jones but could she possibly have hated the name Nellie? There is a marriage for a Nellie E Daniels to an Alfred W Jones Sept 1914 in Norwich 4b 287. Also, I can't find any Jones children mmn Daniels born in or around Norwich.

I still can't find a birth for Ronald but there is this possible for Leslie -
Sept 1917 Leslie F Jones mmn Daniels Woolwich 1d 1713.

As he is a conjuring acrobat maybe we need to think outside the usual boxes?

RutlandBelle

RutlandBelle Report 30 Apr 2010 11:09

Ellen is not at 137 Wellingborough Rd, Northants in 1911

Bryn

Bryn Report 30 Apr 2010 11:43

The conjuring acrobat bit came as shock as family folklore about him being a trapese artist has always been dismissed...

I can now rule out the 1882 Ellen Louisa Daniels as that one died in 1885. That leaves the 1878 one as likley.

Christine, the marriage of Nellie sounds like a lead worth looking at. I find the birth of Leslie F Jones born 1917 curious. If its correct thats the same year Alfred William Jones was born (the original subject of this thread). Conjecturing about him being adopted hence no birth record? Again worth a follow up.

Rutland, do you have the full details of the Farnham Surrey listing? That seems the closest to the year of birth

Thanks to all - some very useful stuff
