I however cannot find him on any census in 1871 thereafter.....

However his death certificate works out that he died in 1897 which makes his birth 1866......

If he is the Bristol John GRICE in C1891, aged 30, fishmonger, b Marylebone, married to Augusta, 29 he is a possibility. Occupation (retail), birthplace of sisters etc.

Family (now FOX) living in Pentonville in C1901. Augusta (widow), John (12), William (10) and Abraham (8) - boys born Bristol.

Death of John seems to be Mar 97 Q aged 31 Barton Regis. This age of death looks wrong to me, as he married in 83. Possibly mistranscription for 37?

Marriage to Harry FOX Sept 97 Bristol.

Looks as if there was a fourth child, born after death of John. Augusta GRICE born Barton R June 97 Q, died following quarter (same quarter as second marriage).

I have checked the death index and age 31 is clear to see so not a mistranscription from the index but info on deaths are only as good as the informants knowledge of the deceased,
