Heavy guns were transported on gun carriages............if you've ever seen the Royal Tournament on TV, you'll have seen the races involving them. |

This is some great information. It will be great to get this verified! I have checked the military records section and if William is part of my family line, he was an army private for 24 years and his trade was a wheelwright. Quick google search shows wheelwright to be somebody who makes and repairs carriage and other mobile equipment wheels! I would never have imagined a trade like this in the army, but i suppose times have changed since the early 1800's!! I had looked at some of those census records and wondered why the childrens birth places were so varied. |

This would explain the varied locations of the children's births - IF it's the right man, of course. |

In 1871, Ann was a widow, with a 4 month old child among her family. |

Ann is shown as a widow on the image in 1871 - two children have been born since 1861 and the youngest, John, is only 4 months. If John was the father, then that cuts down the search period for John snr's death - but there is an 8 year gap between the two youngest children. |

The evidence of census returns indicates that James' father was not William, although his grandfather probably was. |
