I'll put this here because I don't want to forget it

Edward O'Malley on the 1911, looks like 11 years married to Mary

Marriages Dec 1899 (>99%)

Carney Mary W. Derby 8b 833

O'Malley Edward W. Derby 8b 833

On the 1911 Mason and Monks are down as the niece and nephew, and the 2 Carney children are down as boarders.... that seems an odd mistake to make? ( but maybe not)

Marriage Date: 29 Aug 1895
Parish: St Sylvester (Sylvestri), Lancashire, England
Spouse's Name: Margaritam Driscoll
Father's name: Jacobi Carney
Spouse Father's Name: Thomae Carney

Margaret, daughter of Thomas Carney, of 5C 7H Blenheim Street (???address)

Catharina Walsh, of 5C 3H Blenheim Street

Unfortunately, it doesn't give their ages

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 01:11

that's an error then because Margaret should be the daughter of a Driscoll?

that kind of error in either the original or the transcription isn't at all uncommon

The actual address can be seen by going to page 1 ................

Liverpool Workhouse
Workhouse Hospital and Infirmary
Brownlow Hill, Liverpool

by googling ...........

this was the description in ca 1850 .............

BROWNLOW HILL WORKHOUSE

The workhouse in the parish of Liverpool is contained in an extensive clump of buildings, ranging in the wall, which extends from Mount Pleasant to Brownlow Hill. These erections, with additions have grown with the growth of Liverpool, but being still inadequate a great portion are to be knocked down and more commodities and, “classified” premises are to be built
--------

Workhouses all over the UK had the only hospitals and infirmaries that were commonly available to poor people right through into the 20th century.

As a sideline .......

...... one building of that workhouse was still standing on Brownlow Hill in the 1960s, next to the new RC Cathedral, and I had laboratory lessons in it between 1959 and 1963 :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 01:35

could this possibly be John Edward from the 1901 census?

the census was taken on the night of 31 March

I believe workhouse officials registered births in workhouses so possibly he could have been registered in the first quarter even if born at the very end of it

Births Mar 1901
CARNEY Edward Liverpool 8b 105

... because there just is no John Edward birth registered

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Sep 2015 01:47

that could be ...................

but I don't think that John Edward and his mother Margaret had any connection with Bridget Mary and her mother Margaret

there are too many discrepancies ............... age, marital status and occupation as a charwoman

as the wife of a sailor, Margaret nee Driscoll would have had no reason to lie about such facts.

When Bridget was born, Margaret put address as nursery street but that was in Feb 1900 so they had obviously moved by the 1901 census.
Looks like everyone is stumped like me as to finding Bridget and Margaret in 1901 census.

Donna

Donna Report 10 Sep 2015 17:35

Chis Ho, It's interesting that you found out Mary O'Malley was a Carney. We were always under the impression that it was a sailor colleague of James Thomas O'Malley who took Bridget and Thomas in when their mother died and their father was at sea. Looks like Mary was some relation to James after all.

Donna

Donna Report 10 Sep 2015 18:10

From all your research I can conclude that Margaret and baby Bridget are nowhere to be found in the 1901 census and when I look for Margaret age 15 she is with her father Thomas a widower in 1891 but in 1881 she is not in Thomas household.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 19:23

I agree the 1901 Marg & John Ed are unrelated

Rambling Rose you have confused me ...

the 1891 Marg is with father Thomas Driscoll
the 1901 widower Thomas is a Carney

:-)

unfortunately possibly

funny ... this looks a lot like father Thomas Driscoll, in 1881, but he's with his wife and her children and there's no Margaret

if Margaret lived with her father Thomas, James being a seaman, and her father died in 1900, it could explain why she wasn't in the same place in 1901 as she was in early 1900 when Bridget was born.
