Trying to find maiden name for Evelyn Hood, who married Joseph Gower in 1915 (Godstone Surrey England) She was a widow, and had son Reuben Hood in 1903. When he married in 1922 he gave his father as Reuben Hood deceased.
When Evelyn died in 1944, she was buried in Redstone Cemetery, Surrey, along with her second husband Joseph Gower (died 1937). Also interred with them is Kathleen Matilda Joan House (1919 - 1965) whose parents were Harry James House and Ivy Dorothy nee Hood.
Can anyone help please with Evelyn's maiden name, and the connection with Kathleen Matilda Joan House?
Many thanks Maureen

From the gro website, there are these 2 births.

Results:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname: Order:
HOOD, REUBEN ALEXANDER ATTWELL Order
GRO Reference: 1904 S Quarter in NEWPORT MON Volume 11A Page 257 Order

HOOD, REUBEN ALFRED BALLS Order
GRO Reference: 1903 J Quarter in LODDON Volume 04B Page 215

So if the 1903 birth is YOUR Reuben, the mother's maiden name is Balls..

EDIT Looks like his parents were actually Alfred and Ellen so not him.

Can't see Ivy's birth .

You may have to buy a copy of her marriage cert to see who she named as her father.

alviegal

alviegal Report 8 May 2018 15:46

There is a tree on ancestry that has Edward James Smith (from the above 1911 census) as Reuben's father, no marriage shown. It also suggests that Ivy is the daughter of William Hood and Evelyn Hood. There is nothing to back any of this up though.

Could Ivy be his daughter ?

Thankyou everyone! Lots of new info. The 1911 Census with Smith family is right Evelyn and Reuben. 1939 for Reuben and also 1939 for Ivy and Harry also correct. Still hoping to find Evelyn’s maiden name

ErikaH Report 8 May 2018 16:57

If Evelyn knew her father, his name will be on her marriage cert.

That would give you her maiden name

However, as well as there being no trace of a birth for Ivy Dorothy, there isn't one for Evelyn's son Reuben, bearing in mind that he is supposed to have been born in Reading

Looking at the birth years for Evelyn and Ivy, it isn't inconceivable that they were mother and daughter

It's also potentially significant that Ivy was in Reading in 1901

Reuben's stated father Reuben Hood, engineer, deceased, sounds like an invented father to cover illegitimacy.

I can't see any likely Reuben Hood in 1901.
The one who died in 1914 was a rural postman (in 1911), not an engineer.

Can't see any marriage of a Hood and an Evelyn.

Does Evelyn give her father's name on her marriage cert (to Joseph Gower) ?

The tree owner who has Reuben junior listed as son of Edward James Smith may have been confused by the fact that Reuben is listed as "son" on the 1911 census - but it means he's Evelyn's son, not Edward's.
On the other hand, Edward's wife Marion/Annie (nee Ilott) had died between 1901 and 1911 - so who knows ?!

Thanks again - please keep info coming. I took it that Reuben b 1903 was Evelyn Hoods son. On her marriage cert for Joseph Gower in 1915 she gives her father as Thomas Hood which doesn’t ring right as she is Dow as widow!!! Wondered if Edward James smith (1911 Census) could have been her father - he was widower and she widowed so may have gone home?
Regards
Maureen

Maybe she wasn't a widow, but just said she was for respectability, because she had a son.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 8 May 2018 17:56

A tree on Ancestry suggest that Edward Smith fathered her son Reuben

If Evelyn was his daughter, it would have said so on the census.

I doubt very much that she was married at any time before the marriage to Gower

Have you looked for her in ealier censuses?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 May 2018 17:58

That's an interesting baptism of Ivy, Erika.
I wonder why there's no birth record?

This William Hood is a carpenter, in roughly the right area of London - but this Emma's too old to be Ivy's mother:

Evelyn wasn't born in Sheffield, anyway.

There are two Evelyns born in Sheffield within a year or two of 1873, but neither is named Hood, and both are in established families with married parents, and appear on later censuses.
