You ask, ". . . is it possible to do a ‘blind’ search for other children using their names alone."

See my post yesterday at 14:48 for the answer.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 18 Feb 2022 20:39

The baptism in question was in 1783, according to the OP’s info

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Feb 2022 21:07

Oh yes - I missed that.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 18 Feb 2022 21:14

The same principle applies, regardless of dates ;-) ;-)

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2022 11:07

There are a number of baptisms on FMP in Wetton for Chadwick with parents William and Elizabeth

I am NOT going to post them - I will let Peter have the pleasure of finding them - especially as he doesn't seem actually to wish people to find info for him

Peter

Peter Report 19 Feb 2022 11:19

At the moment I am using Findmypast and Ancestry. I will try a search on the parents.
I will try to find the date of their matti age as a starting point. Thanks for your help.

ErikaH

It is not a case of not asking for help. I was seeking help on how to expand my search in the 18th century for family members, given that I had limited information for that period. If I offended you in any way, I apologise, but I assumed that you would appreciate that to reach the 18th century information I had I must have obtained all the subsequent information to guide my search.

Peter

Peter Report 19 Feb 2022 11:43

To clarify the data I have. In the Census data I have for my great-great-great grandmother there are the following issues :

1. She is listed as born in 1778, but that is a difference of 5 years from the apparent baptism I found.
2. She is listed as born in Alstonefields, Staffordshire, but I have found no baptism listed in that place, only Wetton.
3. In 1851 she is listed as Chadwick and a widow but in 1841 as Smith and married. I assume it was not unusual at that time for a widow to revert to her maiden name.

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2022 12:05

No offence Peter - merely explaining why I didn't post the info.

It's always better if you find it yourself..............much more rewarding than having it handed to you 'on a plate'

I am, however, posting again for INFO the 1851 which you say is your relative

James Chadwick Head Married Male 36 1815 Farmer & cordwainer emplg 2 men Wetton, Staffordshire, England
Elizabeth Chadwick Wife Married Female 32 1819 - Grindon, Staffordshire, England
Sarah Chadwick Daughter - Female 11 1840 Scholar Butterton, Staffordshire, England
Sarah Chadwick Mother Widow Female 73 1778 - Staffordshire, England
James Chadwick Nephew Unmarried Male 21 1830 Journeyman cordwainer Wetton, Staffordshire, England
George Chadwick Nephew Unmarried Male 16 1835 Ag servent Wetton, Staffordshire, England
Sampson Malbon Lodger Unmarried Male 39 1812 Landed proprietor Elkstone, Staffordshire, England

The enumerator would assume that her name was Chadwick if he'd been told by the head of the household that she was his mother.....................

When and where did she marry? And to whom?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Feb 2022 12:18

1. She was not necessarily baptised in the same year as she was born.

2. Alstonefield and Wetton are only about 1.5 miles apart. There's no reason why she couldn't have been born in one place and baptised in the other.

3. Perhaps the enumerator in 1851 assumed her name would be Chadwick because she was James Chadwick's mother.

Peter

Peter Report 19 Feb 2022 12:27

Thanks for clarifying the listed information, much appreciated. I did check the marriage status of Sarah Chadwich and she did marry Moses Smith, late in life it appears.
I suspect my great-grandfather George and his brother are living with their uncle because their mother has died. I have yet to confirm that. I have not yet found any marriage record for his uncle despite a wide date and geographical search.

My plan is to find the date of the marriage of Sarah Chadwick’s parents in the 18th century. My searches overall show that the family were farmers of some kind and seem to be located generally in the Staffordshire Moorlands area. I hope this enable my searches to be reasonably localised. Clearly, as has been suggested, there are a number of William/Eliza or Elizabeth marriages in the area this will muddy the search.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2022 12:38

I posted 1841 earlier, and her age is 60................which would have been rounded down as per the instructions given to enumerators.

Unless she was baptised as 5 year old, the baptism isn't this person.

You need more proof before assuming that her parents were William and Elizabeth

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Feb 2022 12:51

Baptism in later childhood wasn't at all uncommon - but as ErikaH says, there's no proof she's the same person.

Nor can you rely on any of the dates given so far.
Although 1851 does give her YOB as c1778, the 1841 census says c1781.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2022 13:02

As I pointed out, ages in 1841 were routinely ‘rounded down’, which would make her anything from 60 to 64

Peter

Peter Report 19 Feb 2022 13:22

Thanks. I have not tried church records as yet. Are these available on FMP.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2022 13:28

FMP collect their info from church records - the one you took to be Sarah’s does not have the image, so you’d need to go to the County Records Office to see it.

Ditto the marriage

However, neither is likely to have much more info than has been transcribed.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Feb 2022 14:43

The marriages I posted are on Family Search - and so is the 1783 baptism:

www.familysearch.org

It's free to use, though you have to register.

BUT be careful to search "Records" and NOT "Genealogies" or "Family Tree".

"Records" are factual documents. The others are just whatever people have put in their trees - often complete rubbish.

Peter

Peter Report 19 Feb 2022 17:18

Thanks. The June 1782 looks the more promising being 10 months before Sarah's baptism in March 1783. I have also found a Death record of a Mary Chadwick in 1839, who may be the mother of by great-grandfather born in 1834 and explain why he was living with his uncle in 1841.

I will try the familysearch website.

Peter

Peter Report 19 Feb 2022 18:04

I tried the familysearch. website. I checked the 1809 Baptism record of Mary Chadwick.. The information on that website is wrong, it lists her father as James Chadwick. The Parish record on FMP states that she is illegitimate and her reputed father is James Newbold. Does not inspire much confidence in the familysearch information!
