Stubbington is in Hampshire, South West of Fareham just off the coast. Im just rechecking a scan I have of the census from 1861. sorry

Carley

Carley Report 12 Aug 2005 16:55

Jess, Elizabeths parents were Smiths not Lamings. Thats definatly them in the census 1891 and 1881 with Emily as Wife. Ive gone back over the copy of the 1861 census (which was buried under a mound of papers) and I cant read it correctly, the copy is so bad, I'll get another copy from the family source.

The Bag

The Bag Report 12 Aug 2005 17:28

have i lost the plot - have i got the wrong Lamings in 1891 and 1881 ?

Jan.jan Report 12 Aug 2005 18:49

For the record, Stubbington is a small village, between Fareham and Gosport where I live. It would have been mainly farming land and is famous for fresh, delicious strawberries. I have been out of action for a few days with a nail in the phone extension, which stopped me connecting. This message looks very confusing. Can you let me know the details of the marriage that you are checking and I will go to the Record Office on Tuesday and get all the info for you. Would that help? Jan.Jan

The Bag

The Bag Report 12 Aug 2005 19:15

Jan it is a Stubbington birth i think we need. Where would you say you were born if you were going to be less specific? Fareham ? Jess

Phoenix Report 12 Aug 2005 19:18

Elizabeth Jane is unlikely to have been baptised in Stubbington as there was no such church at that date. It would be sensible to check with Genuki, but I think she should have been baptised in Titchfield or Alverstoke. Crofton Holy Rood, which is where several of my Stubbington ancestors were baptised has registers that run from rather later - about the 1870s.

The Bag

The Bag Report 12 Aug 2005 19:19

Elizabeth Churchward abt 1835 Gosport, Hampshire, England Wife Alverstoke Hampshire Samuel P Churchward abt 1843 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England Head Alverstoke Hampshire Sarah Gorman abt 1856 Gosport, Hampshire, England Niece Alverstoke Hampshire Elizabeth J Laming abt 1849 Gosport, Hampshire, England Servant Alverstoke Hampshire let me go and see her marital status age 22 UN married! ------------------------------------- Brenda i am really not sure of Carly's source of info on the baptism

Im wondering if this could be Elizabeth Jane Smith using her middle name 'Jane' as christian name. Mother and father names would fit, no Emily though!: 1861 England Census records matching your search for All Records > Census > 1861 England Census Match Quality Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image Ellen Smith abt 1846 Gosport, Hampshire, England Daughter Alverstoke Hampshire George Rd Smith abt 1849 Gosport, Hampshire, England Son Alverstoke Hampshire >>>>Jane Smith abt 1847 Gosport, Hampshire, England Daughter Alverstoke Hampshire Mary Ann Smith abt 1806 Fareham, Hampshire, England Wife Alverstoke Hampshire Mary Jane Smith abt 1855 Gosport, Hampshire, England Granddaughter Alverstoke Hampshire William Smith abt 1804 Gosport, Hampshire, England Head Alverstoke Hampshire

Don't forget St.Edmunds Church in Stubbington, which is known as the Crofton Old Church. That started off in the 9th and 10th Century. The offer is still there to check out the wedding next week if you want.

Jan Jan Thank you for the very kind offer, if you are going to the records centre I would really appreciate a lookup. * Elizabeth Smith marriage to William Laming in the Gosport/Alverstoke area, time frame is just before 1866 this is when her first baby (William Charles F Laming) arrived. Elizabeth died in 1879. William then married Elizabeth's sister in 1880, in St Johns Forton - I have the certificate for this. * Elizabeth was born in Stubbington possibly c1846, baptised 3 Feb 1850 Fareham, Hants. Thank you once again Carley

Carley Report 13 Aug 2005 12:45

*Jess* The baptism info came from another genes member, we share this connection, I have tried to contact her and am awaiting her reply. As for siblings: Elizabeth and Emily are all I know of, again this came from the same source as the baptism. As soon as I get a reply I'll post it here. *Jan* Look forward to hearing from you, fingers crossed for Tuesday! Thanks again for all your hard work Carley

I still don't know how you know that the 1850 Elizabeth Anne birth is the same person who married Mr Laming around 1866? nell

Carley

Carley Report 13 Aug 2005 13:10

*Nell* I've jumped the gun havn't I? I have taken the info from the other member to be true, as they have certificate for the sisters marriage. I have asked my source to join the board, but shes in OZ. Hopefully hear from her soon Carley

The Bag Report 13 Aug 2005 15:03

Dont know about 'jumped the gun' you seem to have a lot of unsubstantiated (and sometimes conflicting ) 'evidence' Elizabeth 's baptism for one. Where does you contact say she was baptised - you have two place, neither of which i can find on the IGI. jess x

Carley Report 15 Aug 2005 03:34

Hi Jess, Nell and Jan Elizabeths birthplace - Stubbington taken from 1871 census, age 24 wife of William C Laming, she was living at 232 Holly Street, Gosport, Hants. Also living with them was Mary Ann Smith - Mother in law, 49, born Stubbington and Emily Smith - sister in law, age 9, born Gosport. I asked my source where she got the baptism from, but all she told me is what Ive written above. She also said that Stubbington is often refered to as Fareham, think this what you already said Jan. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all, Im abroad at mo. Hope to hear from you soon Carley
