Well, that's the last time I believe what some silly woman says about silkworms and their mating habits - or lack of them. I will listen to men in khaki then, Jax. Not sure where the mulberry tree comes in. Do they eat the leaves, Mick?

*tut* Of course we are all virgins. Baby silkworms come from the silkworm bush at the end of the garden.

so if tyhey get boiled that means they only ever make silk once

So we get the story straight from the silkworms mouth so to speak. I guess JA that a silkworm wouldn't feel up to spinning silk once they've been boiled. Who would have thought that a thread about silkworms could get to 2 pages lol. Still Eldrick's frog thread reached over 300;))

not flippin' silkworms AGAIN !!

We kept some silk worms at primary school when I was about 11.
They got really big and fat.

They especially eat white Mulberry. We moved them across to new leaves by lifting them on paint brushes. I remember we were told not to touch them because the sweat on our hands would harm them but I think we picked them up gently when they got as big as our fingers.

When we kept them in school the teacher let the moths hatch so we didn't boil the cocoons (I think the class would have been upset if we'd boiled them after caring for them for weeks!). The moths can't eat because they have no mouth parts so their lives as moths are very short!

They are interesting to keep with kids if you have access to mulberry leaves.


Unravelling the silk was fun but letting the moths hatch meant the cocoons had holes in them so it wasn't one complete strand.

I thought silk came from Ann summers

Still I suppose no respectable virgin silkworm would be seen dead working in such a place

I thought silk came from fabric shops but I have been so enlightened by this thread. Just a question...are all the virgin silkworms female and if so do they all scream and faint when a male silkworm enters their domain?

Of course they are all female, Males don't have the concetration span.
They are too busy chasing the norty Silkworms.
