Well now I have just frozen on Ancestry then went back to GR on the new link, which has'nt frozen all day, and that was frozen too!!! Got rid of the Ancestry and then the GR link was working again. I think it is all to do with Ancestry's link to GR.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 1 Dec 2008 11:18

Received this just now after reporting trouble to GR.

Dear ~Mel~ °°

Thanks for reporting this problem.
The site has been experiencing exceptional levels of traffic over the last few days which is why this may be happening. Our technical team is currently investigating and we hope to have the problem rectified as soon as possible.

Suffice to say, this is usually just a temporary problem and should work OK if you try again.

Best regards,

Julie

What a load of rubbish!! Why don't they just say the site is doing updateing or something like that. We all know it is not easy for them to work on the site with so many of us using it all day and night and every day but we should be informed as where would they be without all their customers. It is happening to me on Ancestry as well and the sites are linked.

It is possible that the different sites .co.uk .com etc are running on different servers, hence why when you try the South African site it is faster. Possibly the most users are in the UK which is causing that server to run slow.
Hosting is expensive business especially if you are using a Microsoft server, which GR are. It would have been cheaper all round if they had used the Linux servers. As anyone who uses Linux as an operating system knows it is open source and for the most part free.

Someone asked what Firefox is. Firefox is a browser the same as Internet Explorer is a browser, there are others including Safari for windows and mac, Opera, Google Chrome and a few others. If you are using Firefox make sure you are using version 3, this is less prone to crashing than version 2.

For my part I am using Firefox 3 with adblock and I subscribe to the easylist. I am using the .com part of GR and have suffered no problems with freezing or crashing of the site.

Jane Report 1 Dec 2008 15:27

This is what they told me.

Dear Jane,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I have just tested this and have been unable to recreate this problem.
If the error persists, I would be grateful if you would let me know which operating system and browser (and version of that browser) that you are using to access the site in order that I may attempt to recreate this issue and further investigate for you. If you could also give me step-by-step details of what is happening when you try to do this, then that'd be really helpful.

Many thanks in advance of your co-operation.

Best regards,

Alex Brett

What exactly did they tell you Babycham, as safari is a browser and not a server, they are two different things.
Not all mac users use safari, quite a lot use Firefox and Camino.

Dear Joan

Thanks for your email. I am sorry but at the moment some browsers for Mac users are not compatible with the site. Our technical team are aware of this and hope to have it fixed soon.

In the mean time please could you try using Mozilla Firefox? We know that this is totally compatible with the site. here is a useful link for you:
