Totally agree Ann i wonder how much revenue would be lost if they stopped selling fags and booze? Oh and choclate :-D

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 3 Jan 2013 22:44

well I used to work for Gallahers - Manikin cigar factory here in Cardiff - at the time a packet of B & H was about 3/6 - three shillings went to the government and the rest to Gallahers - so what d'you reckon the government reap from a pack of fags these days = at least a fiver

now if everyone gave up smoking where would that tax come from I wonder? so for all the moaning people do about smokers they should hold on to that fact

Suzanne Report 3 Jan 2013 22:45

IF this goes through its going to open the flood gates for all manner of medical conditions, will people with cancer that smoke be refused medical help? will people who have heart problems be refused help because their lifestyle caused their condition? type 2 dia will they be refused help, and the list goes on,
the only people who will get help will be the health tourists ,who drain our health service yr after yr.
so much for the common garden tax payer, but hey this is the great britain ,

Agree that this appears to be aimed at those on benefits, and not, for example, rotund MPs etc (love to see Cyril Smith types on a cross-trainer :-D),

There are numerous obese persons around, and unfortunately not necessarily individuals. I've frequently seen a mother, father and one or two children wandering around (especially supermarkets) in track suits that would not fit someone XX sizes smaller, filling trollies with trash food whilst munching on crap as they waddle around.

On the other hand, as has been pointed out, some forms of excess weight gain have a very valid medical or perhaps psychological reason. These are the people who should not, in any way, be disenfranchised by stupid 'think tank' rulings (not law yet).

Obvious Self-inflicted obesity ? Punish it.

When I was young(er), you rarely saw anyone overweight. If they were it was 99% a medical cause. The only 'fast food' outlets then were the 'local chippy', but you couldn't afford to visit even them on a regular basis. If you were fortunate enough to have a 'lunchbox' to take to school or work, the contents were most often paste sandwiches and a piece of fruit - no chocolate, crisps, biscuit things etc.

Totally soft society created by self-centred politicians over the years....and I'm stopping that there before I get really annoyed....... :-P

Don't envy the GP's position in this, but then have adverse experience when a diagnosis of 'menopause combined with obesity' was, actually. Leukemia. :-|

I know :-D

Seriously something does has to be done to address the problem. As I said from my viewpoint of the effect on their children.

All of us as adults make our own choices and pay the consequencies but why on earth make your kids suffer and turn them into a 'mini me' or a 'maxi me'.

Gonna say though we had neighbours and they were both huge! shopping delivered every week, delivery man was like a sherpa :-|

They had 2 young boys and couldn't kick a football around with them and play catch. Not fair is it?

Maybe teaching children cooking in schools instead of 'Food technology'
ie (lesson 1) Bring in a pizza box and read the ingredients off said pizza box (very difficult for my children as we never ate pizza)
(lesson 2) design your own pizza box

....no 'make your own pizza' involved.

A bit of nutritional value of foods wouldn't go amiss.

dont think this idea will ever work out. think of the cost involved to see if each obese person was fit to undertake any form of a fitness regime. maybe its time to start putting food rations in place on all junk food that is full of sugar, salt and fat. and god knows what else. junk food is cheaper when you think of the cost of buying and cooking fresh food. 2mins in the microwave is cheap, compared to the using your oven. i have a chippy tea now and then, but non of the microwave crap.

MOTH is a big fella, he's about 100Kg, about 6' tall (I'm bi-lingual with weights & measurements lol).

He's been about that size since he was 16!

Not a spare ounce on him, and he's fit.

A few years ago a new doctor at our GPs told him he was obese! I was furious! Next time I saw my GP I told him, and he wasn't impressed ~ with the doctor!

I read an article yesterday that had me shaking my head in disbelief. A local school canteen has sushi on the menu!! What happened to salad rolls?

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 4 Jan 2013 00:38

Scozz, you've reminded me of what was on offer at my daughters' primary school - 'pizza' made of a pizza base, tomato ketchup and 'Kraft' cheese slices!!!
We were entitled to free school dinners (I signed the form so the school got funding), but my girls took sandwiches to school (marmite, usually),
Elder daughter had a school meal once, at primary school, it was a beefburger - she loved mine, made from mince, onions and vague herbs from the garden.
She took one bite from the school burger and threw up over the plate!!!

When I was at primary school, we had 'proper' food - shepherds pie, toad in the hole, spotted dick etc. THEN I had a 'proper' meal at home, and weighed all of 4 stone 8lb, aged 11!!!
I remember that, as I was also 4ft 8inches, and took size 1 shoes.

It's a hark back to "Victorian Values".

In the course of my research I've read lots of minutes made by the Guardians of the Poor and also pauper and workhouse records.

Pay outs were stopped to any pauper seen "wasting" the alms given. For example a man was reported to have been seen buying a beer and had his money withdrawn.

You can't force people to make sensible choices in a humane society.

This dammed "Nanny State" is running out of control, well:-

I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
!!!!! I did it my way !!!!!

Also I can think of one Secretary of State who must be quaking in his boots at the thought of this proposal if he loses his seat at the next election and ends up on the dole ;-)

Westminster Council one of (if not) the wealthiest Boroughs in the country

They cover an area which is full of licenced 'junk food' sellers

They have some of the most expensive properties in London and they also have areas of terrbile deprivation.

The woman who thought this up is a complete idiot.

Maybe next year they can start rebuilding and opening up all the old Workhouses around, chuck all the people on benefits in there and just forget about them.

Westminster Council would love it if they had no social housing then they would have no 'common' people living there! :-(

I like the way this country is walking blindly into a police state, were every aspect of you life will be goverened by a law. There is to much of blame thy neighbour, when one should be holding the goverment to account. To many people vote like sheep and they dont look at the record of the party they vote for
